Hey...I hope they love is 'cause they love us.

All I'm saying is that when I see a dog, or one jumps on me and tries to be my friend, I give him a look that conveys...

"I ain't buying what you're selling, Rover."

But I hope I'm wrong.

Haven't you ever seen a dog smile Billy?

Not that I can recall, but this dog freaks me out.

You are missing out Billy. They don't sell anything - what you see is what you get - a dog that likes you and is happy to see you. Now if you happened to want to play some ball, that would be cool as well, but all you really need to do is to give them a pat and tell them you are happy to see them too. Simple, uncomplicated and no ulterior motives - unlike most people you meet.

I understand that dogs do all those things.

My only question is whether it's because they rely on you for food or because they truly love you.

Maybe they talk with the other dogs in the neighborhood...

"Oh, I see the humps car is pulling up....here we go..time for the big show..."

"Remember to smile."

"I will. I'm just really getting tired of this...We really need to think about getting out of this town. We can hunt or something."

"It won't work. You remember what happened to Bruno, right? He was a strapping 120 pound Adonis. He ran away and they found him rummaging through dumpsters, weighing 72 pounds, with his coat all nappy. It wasn't pretty."

"Yeah, yeah. I remember."

"So we have to lick them, watch their crappy movies with them, pant and wag our tails. Not much in the grand scheme of things."

"I guess you're right. Alright...see you later."

And then he runs off and does the whole glad to see you, I'm so happy you are home routine.

I'm just saying that food might be the great motivator for all of it.

That's kinda funny. You may have a point, too. She is the biggest beggar for people food ever! She doesn't eat a lot of her food, but she can inhale a piece of pizza stolen from your plate in a heartbeat!

Please please don't do this. As others have said, dogs are pack animals. They need constant company (or as near to that as possible). Solitary confinement is literally torture for humans; it is for dogs too. The space issue probably isn't so bad, once you commit to all the walking - but the working 10 hours a day issue is big.

Sorry to say it as I know dogs are great company.
