Wait and how could I forget Kate? As in Kate Bush? LOVE LOVE LOVE her. Wish she would tour, as her and Bowie are probably the only remaining performers that I would KILL to see in concert.

I saw Bowie in concert once. I think he is a truly great singer.

Don't know if you've ever seen this, and it is the wrong time of year, but watching it I was taken with how well he stands up with one of the Old Guard.

Just remembered this is the first song I ever sang in front of an audience, at my elementary school's Christmas show.

That's a great one, Ken ... People try to put us ddddown...

It's crazy when you talk about great singers. So much of it is SUBbjective, but then so much can be agreed on, so I donno- beats the hell outta me.

I even think someone like Mick Jagger, who most would say is not a great singer, inasmuch as blessed with a great voice, but he sure knows how to communicate a song. Angie...

Yeah, that's a good one, Ken. Really shows Roger's chops.

I think Robert Plant is my favorite singer of the rock guys.

One of my early favorites from Led.

And now it is officially Jack Daniels time.

Woke up sick and been a hurtin' cowboy all day.

So, you know in a sense, strictly medicinal.

As for male up and comers, check out Ben Sollee, especially "How to see the sunrise."

I'm also really enjoying Michael Fitzpatrick of Fitz and the Tantrums.

Some favorites (I have over 1,000 of those old-fashioned CD thingies):

Eva Cassidy
Richard Thompson (amazing guitarist and songwriter as well)
Shannon McArdle
Mariza (from Portugal)
Kate & Anna McGarrigle
Randy Newman (not for his voice, really)
Kim Richey

Petula Clark remains my favorite of many. Met her once years back before I moved to Japan. Lovely voice and lovelier person.

Maria Callas. Smoke in her voice, power in her soul.

Shoujo Jidai. They're fun to watch. Who cares if they can't dance? They're all pretty, sexy, and right now they're the hottest ticket in Asia.

My favourite male singer is Michael Stipe from REM, the vulnerability of his voice on their early recordings is something else.

Aretha Franklin would get my vote as greatest ever, I think.

A personal peccadillo, Kim Deal from The Pixies (and The Breeders). Her voice is just.......filthy. Sorry, but it is.

My music appreciation teacher told us, "singers are a dime a dozen."

I agree.

Well, I strongly disagree. In fact, to me it is the odd, odd person whether professional or not who can really sing. To a large extent, singers are born not made. So whereas most anyone can learn how to play an instrument (maybe not well, but play) most people no matter how hard they work will never be great singers.

Well, this is my point. You're either born with a good voice or you aren't. Whereas to be a top notch musician generally takes years of education and hard work. To me it takes much more skill to master an instrument than it takes to sing.

That said, one of my favorite singers was Lonesome Dave, who didn't have a good voice, but sang with an infectious enthusiasm.

Born with the voice, and maybe a knack for storytelling as well, which would explain people like Billie Holiday.

It's the "dime a dozen" phrase that I disagree with. If anything, a great singer is worth their weight in gold.

I love the old timers like Dino and Louie. I love Tim Buckley and Robert Palmer,
the Blues Brothers and Elvis wish their lives were not cut short.
I'm living my life with Joe Cocker and Michael McDonald. Miss Annie Lenox
is the bomb. More recently Tom Wilson and his many endeavors are blasting
at my house, along with Miss Lisa Marie Presley. I just love music, all kinds,
and I'm sure I'm forgetting a big favorite!
