One of my brothers doesn't read books. It drives my mum up the wall. She challenged him to read a book, and tell her what happened at the end. He did, then said he'd only read the first and last chapters, and reading the whole thing would have been a complete waste of time because she only wanted to know how it ended. :tongue

Every birthday/xmas my younger sister asks me what I'd like as a gift, and I always name some book or other, until a couple of years ago, when she said "no, no more books!", as if I was Renton in Trainspotting asking for one more hit :D

I buy my wee nephew books, and I'll buy the other one books when he's old enough. My nephew unwrapped his Christmas present and said "Not another book! I didn't want books!"

So next year he's getting a tangerine and a lump of coal. :tongue

In all seriousness, I don't understand people who say "I don't like books" - and that's not me being sententious (alright, maybe a little bit), because to me, it's like saying "I don't like films", or "I don't like music" - some films are shite, some are great, it's just a question of finding what you like. Books can get inside your head and lay eggs in a way that other art forms can't.

I agree. Some books haunt me. Some films do too but that's what I get for liking spooky horror films. :D But books do it more.

Reading 'Day of the Triffids' when I was about 8 or 9 was a pivotal moment in my life, because it was the first "proper" book I had read, and it was (is) fucking awesome, and affected me in a way that I don't think anything really has before or since. It's just words on a page, and yet......

I read Betty Blue when I was 15 or 16 and it just shattered me. I haven't even been able to watch the film, although I'm told it's very good.

I loved The Crimson Petal and the White as well. Apparently Michel Faber followed it up with a collection of short stories to explain what happened to them all. I'll have to grab that if I ever have money again. :D

Happy Sunday, pubbers. *puts the coffee on*

Hope you are all enjoying your weekend. I'm watching the kids swim right now, then we're off to buy some shorts for my son. The exciting life of being a mom :)

Hey, Spiral.

I've been tidying up so the place doesn't look like a bombsite when I leave. Why can't I just be tidy? It's one of life's mysteries. :D

Okay, I have to say, I just put that one down as it was not feeling at all sympathetic to its characters, not one of them! But I'm glad to have your comment because that inspires me to give it more time. (I am an impatient critter these days.)

Been sick so not posting but trying to catch up a bit and though this was a few days ago, I had to catch it! :D

Oh, I'm mostly all better now, just a bit weak still.

Going back to read more threads and posts....

Everyone, have a Baileys on me. Open bar tonight. (Well, most nights akshully.)

:hi: Rock! I'm sure it was not shameful at all but was a much needed break. So glad you had a restorative time; we all need those! No guilts allowed, hear? :)

Heck, if you want guilt, I have written about zilch since mid April. I've barely been able to squeeze out a blog post per week. Moving is hay-ell.

But I believe I see some balance and the light of normalcy around the next bend in the road, there....

How's with the Pubbers today? Fran? Moved? I iz sympathizin'!

It doesn't look like any of us has written anything, so we're all in the same boat. Which means we should drink instead. Yes, drink. I'm thinking baileys, or maybe even baileys. Or maybe baileys with a side of baileys. And an extra baileys for Kyla for being ill.

Once a mate and I had been on a marathon booze bender and got home with the intention of drinking more, to find that the only booze in the house was a bottle of Baileys that was about 8 years old. It had all separated out, so there was an oily sludge on top, and grey sediment like concrete on the bottom. It was like alcoholic cream mixed with a packet of gravel.

Still drank it.

Wonderful idea. :e2drunk:

I bet he likes my description better. :D

I preferred yours, pkbzrod's was more accurate :)

I have a question, that I thought I'd ask in the friendly pub, rather than outside in the rain on the AW highstreet, like some mental preaching about the end of times who everyone avoids eye contact with. If anyone can offer advice, I'd be grateful.

I think it would be good for me to have someone beta my work, but I'm quite specific about the kind of person I want - I'd like a mentor, someone published (ie knows more than I do), preferably female (my two MCs are female, and I'm a dude, so I'd like to know if any of it is offensively misogynistic or just plain wrong).

The board says "be specific about what you want" when asking for a beta, but I don't want to storm in there with my long list of demands. Of course I'd be willing to offer my services as beta in return (such as they are, I've beta'd 6 or 7 novels for AW members now), and I wouldn't expect a line by line critique.

Is that all a bit much? Obvs I'm grateful for anyone who would wish to offer help, so I don't want to come off like a diva. *tosses hair, waves hand to dismiss lackey*

I haven't delved too deep into the beta thread. Maybe you could look at how others word their requests? Maybe stress which is most important, or make it clear you'd be happy with more than 1 beta-reader in order to get both of those perspectives? (For example, maybe the mentor reader would give a more detailed crit while someone else just gives you the female point of view.)

Baileys for all, yes. Good plan.
