That Gremlin was really sexy with his multiple legs and his incessant grumbling. Awesome. Add something special to your book, lol. I love crazy critters.

I forgot to mention my book Hatchings. In it, a genetic engineering experiment in producing hydrogen for a new hydrogen fuel goes wrong and giant insects (plausible ones) and some other Arthropoda (spiders notably) begin re-emerging into the modern ecology. Imagine grasshoppers a foot long, ants the size of mice, and a spider with a 6-ft leg spread (the only point where I stretch plausibility). I had the book vetted by entomology scientists and grad students so the science is reasonably correct even.

I really need to finish plotting the second book (of a planned 4).

A mutated drop of ink with five arms, crude claspers and a mollusk shaped mouth used in the process of absorbing paper.

I like to try and take common myths and legends and twist them into something new (it works especially well with urban fantasy, which is what I mostly write). If you ever heard of shadow people, I took that basic idea and warped it into something darker, able to absorb light and kill with the slightest touch (or shoot rays of dark energy on the stronger versions).

You guys are more creative than I am. I just started a high fantasy. My only real monster so far is a cockatrice, who will play a major roll. It's always the small ones you have to watch out for. It adds a whole new level to playing chicken.

I've created many types of creatures in my Galactic Seven Series. Here are a few:

Thubians--lizard-like creatures that are sparse in number, but make up for it by being extremely fierce. They have been known to assist other races one moment and the next, be their harsh enemies--whatever is needed to advance their cause. Their cause is usually domination.

Morax--flying feline-like creature that has poisonous claws and fangs.

Lesaithian: 9 foot tall mantis with eight sharply barbed appendages and two bone crushing mandibles. Not much are know of these creature because not many who have seen them has lived.

Octavian Fire Fish--a fish that secretes an acid from glands just behind the gills and fins which can cause third degree burns and death. It is sometime used as a torture device by unscrupulous enemies.

Plenty.

There are many strange bird-fish things that inhabit the mists; an unwary or unlucky Mister could find their ship in dire trouble at the teeth of one. The worst is the Crier. It wraps it's long body around the base of the floating islands and makes a sound like a weeping child to encourage misters to stop and help - and then it drags the ship down under the surface of the mist, to do who-knows-what with the unlucky crew.

Land isn't much better, but at least you can see the wild animals coming.

The Baukren are very minotaur like in appearance, but are a bit spookier in appearence with their heads looking like a cross between a bull's skull and a normal bull. Their entire body is covered in a hairy exoskeleton.

Also plan on including the Vaddisz, who are half-boar, half-men who are about the height of dwarves but incredibly sturdy and strong. They are mercenaries who serve the Orcs in my series (The Orcs are actually the good guys for a change. Refreshing change. :))

I have Jiit. They're 8-feet-tall rotting, oozing carcasses of putrefying flesh, condemned by the gods to wander the world for the search of a battle after battle.

See, they're in constant pain - their punishment for the vile acts in their lives - and the only way to (temporarily) relieve that pain is to extract the death cries from the dying men in the battlefields. They can't use any weapons, they can't kill anyone, just wait until the death claims the warriors.

That's a cool concept for a creature.

My coming work features the Revkavir, monsters that are formed off lingering memories. They have a myriad of forms and I designed most to be an amalgam of mythological and occult creatures with a touch of eldritch horror. More powerful Revkavir form from more pervasive and shared memories, however I guess I can't spoil the stronger ones. ;p

A lesser one would be the Eyeshock, a roughly humanoid creature with multiple, mutated limbs and a odd skin tone/pattern. Not too threatening though? However the idea of the Eyeshock is that's appearance and skin pattern triggers a mental shock in the human brain, inducing temporary blindness. It's idea is based on the concept of averting one's gaze from horror and the myriad of optical illusion pictures out there that play on the human brain. Besides that, they usually don't come alone either.

Some of my own favourites are the telepathic feathered cats, the giant krill-feeding turtles and the musical alien frogs.

Oooh, any chance of a meganeura? Always been a favourite among the giant arthopoda.
