First, what kind of corset are you making? I've made several Elizabethan style corsets. I know the principle behind the Victorian style, but haven't had any need of making one.
The cloth you use is cotton duck, canvas, or denim. It has to be one of those to be strong enough to hold up under the stresses of a corset. You might have a lining cloth of cotton or flannel, but that's not necessary, seeing as you would always wear a shift under it. I always used a damask or other fashion fabric on top, to make it pretty, but it was two layers of cotton duck underneath.
If you've not worn a corset before, let me stress in the strongest possible terms: IT MUST FIT PERFECTLY. Too tight and it doesn't work. Too loose, and it has a tendency to creep up and down and back and forth, and gouging you with every movement. This is why it's pretty important to make a toile -- several, if necessary -- and get another experienced seamstress to help you get it just right.
Thank you for all this! I'm looking to make something like a simplified Victorian corset, I believe - a strapless, fairly unadorned hourglass shape. Having had success with a strapless dress, I figured it would make a fun next challenge, even if I never wear it for more than a "look what I did" pic.
I do have a couple much more experienced sewing buddies I think will be able to help me with the fit *fingers crossed* And who knows, maybe it'll turn out nice enough for Ren Fair!
I know tomorrow is the Hedonism day, but Sunday's always a pretty busy day for me, what with church and all. Can I have my Hedonism day on Saturday instead? I really don't want to do either jack or shit, and Minecraft is calling my name.
BTW: I have decided: Minecraft is Lego for grown ups.
Minecraft is a legal drug. >.> My sister and I had to set an only-Wednesdays rule because we spent so much time in there. What're you building, if I may ask?
I think the boning would only provide a distraction, better to put that off until the corset is done.
(I am sorry. But it's me.)
You know what they say, all work and no play makes a person wonder why they're making a corset in the first place...
