Only going to be around this morning, 'cause we're leaving work for our half day of community service around noon. I actually love this event, I like going out and doing some physical labor (I'll be working at the local food pantry, which is just ENORMOUS and we always wind up hauling huge boxes of stuff around). I think it's the part of me that grew up a farm girl.

Good thing we're getting out of here, because I'm already tired of dealing with stupidity at work. It's damn hard to train new people when Flaky Boss keeps giving them wrong information all the time. (or no information)

another flash check in. As of last night we have power, water, and gas. There is has been a lot of bullshit and politics going on and drama broke out today. Two cities were majorly affected right across from each other and the cities are not communicating with each other and wrong information is getting to all the police. It's ugly. So right now everyone is being kept out until 3:00pm. My family is down there waiting to be let in. I walked back to the house because I needed to eat (still like 15 pounds underweight and I can't miss meal right now). As soon as I'm done I'll walk back down there. They believe all the survivors have been found now. Just pulling out bodies now. So my family is going to go to my aunt and uncle's house to salvage what we can. Sorry I don't have the time to catch up. I'll try to find out what's going on with everyone hopefully tonight.

So after my check in I walked back down get back to my family who were waiting to be let in further down.... WELL a road block had been set up closer to the house and they weren't letting me in at all.... I laughed at them. I've broken into things with much tighter security then that do you think a shoddy put together police road block could keep me out? Oh hell no. I totally got back in there. There is a reason why growing up if anyone ever needed back into their house they called me. There's very little I cannot get into if I'm determined enough. I was sopping weight from the knees down but come on people. Eventually everyone was let down to their houses at around 3:00pm. We got a lot done on my aunt's house. Today. Me being the light footed skinny bastard I was running across boards, crawling under things and climbing over the few remaining walls to get to what valuables are in there. Yeah I have cuts all over my arms and legs.

So, just out of curiosity, with the advent of e-publishing, what keeps the publishing industry from opening its own online marketplace for e-editions? Well, other than bone-deep stubborness?

I mean, if you're going to do all the cover art, editing, formatting, etc for your author's ebooks, why the hell sell the damn things through Amazon anymore? Who cares if your competition is in the same emporium? People will buy what they're gonna buy, but they don't have to get their spatulas at the same place as their e-books.

I get that they don't have the structure in place for shipping physical books--but...

Someone who's smarter than me explain this.

If Tas is "that mom" then I'm the other mom. It's great that Caleb's got the skills and physique to do what he's doing, but please be sure your minor injuries cannot become more than that.

Clovia, I'm far from the pro most people here are, but my theory is that publishers of print books know that book buyers don't think, Hm, I need something new to read; better browse HarperCollins. Instead, they know the way people shop for books online most often is not publisher-specific but seller-specific, and they want sales sites with a large selection of their preferred genre and with customer reviews--like Amazon and Barnes & Noble. (Nice to see you, BTW!)

It had to happen eventually. Fairly early this morning, the contractor called to say he needed a check. I suggested he come by after eleven. So at 9:10 he arrived, taking a chance I'd be home but willing to come back later if I wasn't. I was (and am) wet-haired and wearing nothing but my bathrobe.

I got a tetanus shot yesterday morning. All injuries and cuts cleaned and already healing. And no arrests on my part, but I talked to a woman that her husband had been arrested three times just that day. But today there is tons of lightning and rain so no going back down there until it stops.

I'm pretty sure I'm sick. Woke up yesterday with a scratchy throat, and it's not getting any better. Bleh. I really just wanted to curl up in bed and stay home, but we're super slammed right now, and I'd just feel guilty.

Was thinking about something my mentor-ish person said when we met up last week. They're working toward adding new job grades in my department (so that there's a "career path" here.

) and he asked me if they offered me one of the higher job grades if I'd take it. At the time, I told him I wasn't sure, 'cause more money would sure be nice. But the longer I sit here and deal with this idiocy, the more I think that more money just isn't enough. I need out of here.

I am having all the excitement today! I got to sign my contract, which means I am now a real, official teacher. I also visited my school and got the tour along with some set up stuff. Apparently I will be teaching their English seniors along with two 11th grade classes.

We saw Star Trek with Kid Two in Boston--it's exactly what you expect of a Star Trek movie, and lots of fun.

The good news-bad news department has this: The good news is, The Kid got a job in her field in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The bad news is, The Kid got a job in her field in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Thanks, gang! I'm super excited and probably just a teensy bit overwhelmed with all the things I'll have going on this summer. But it's going to be awesome!

Also, just told my housemate that I'll be moving out by August 1st (yay!) she actually took it really well. I think we're both kind of done living together. It's been three years after all and my Loki cat is attempting to eat her kitchen herbs. :tongue

So yeah, all the good things! And my girlfriend volunteered to drive the U-Haul. Ah, the joys of having a professional driver. Now I'll just have to rope various friends into helping me carry stuff. :tongue
