Yeah, Rebekah is going to be on the Originals, right? She wouldn't really be an original anymore if she became human.

Elena would feel like a, "OMG, gotcha! All is back to normal!"

Unless it's some random thing like them giving it to Bonnie's mother or some such - or - Tyler returns and takes it but that makes no sense as he'd still be a WW. It will probably be Damon or Stefan. Either one would be interesting.

I always figured it would be Damon, since he's the most interesting one to experience that change, but I never thought he'd take it on purpose. The's probably going to be some bait-and-switch, as usual.

At K. Taylor: I agree. If they do have Damon take the cure, then they haven't done a great job leading into it, as far as characterization. Of course, the characterization on this show is usually obscured by PLOT POINT, PLOT POINT, PLOT POINT!

What we have leading into it is: 1) Damon's desire to get Elena; and no, I don't quite get how this would play into that, except it would maybe get Elena's attention and make her think of Damon in a new light; 2) Damon saying to that girl in season 2 (?) that he misses being human; 3) the fact that Damon doesn't mind Elena as a vampire and has said so; 4) I'd have to go back and rewatch, but I seem to remember a few times when Damon was actually very tight-lipped about what he wanted to do with the cure; he said he wanted to break the sire bond and get Elena's humanity back, but if I recall, he never said that he wanted her to be human. Maybe I'm wrong?

Besides, the only other viable option, story-wise, is Elena. (Stefan and Rebekah would be too obvious, Katherine would be a bit random, and Caroline doesn't really want it.) But Elena was human for the first three seasons. Been there, done that. It would make this entire season a complete wash.

Anyway, I feel there are hints. It's my pet theory!

Yeah, he said on the island he likes her as a vampire, but he was going to get her the Cure because she wanted it. He'd rather she be happy as a vampire like he is, but he does want her to be happy, so....yeah.

Rebekah will be on The Originals, but we don't know how much or when. She's built the most life in Mystic Falls and really doesn't feel highly of her brothers at this point, so she'd need a REALLY GOOD reason to move to New Orleans. I see her as a crossover character, easily bouncing between both as plot guides.

Stefan would like to take it and be able to move on.

Elena's definitely a been-there-done-that. While she never wanted to be a vampire, at least not this young, there are a lot of problems with her being mortal. She'd be the doppelganger again, so Klaus can get her blood for more hybrids. If she has children, the doppelganger strain lives on. And, she's weak as a kitten compared to all these supernatural types.

Really don't know what'll happen at this point. No one knows Damon has the Cure except Alaric. Damon could hide it indefinitely.

So much for my pet theory!

My problem with this show is it always takes the OMG path instead of the more interesting, character-driven path. I feel like this was the OMG path.

I honesty don't remember how Silas was made immortal. He pissed off Qetsiyah by loving another woman, right? So there's a love triangle there with him as the middle? This show is sooo convoluted.

Correct. Quetsiyah is a scorned witch.

WriterWho, Stefan is Silas' doppelganger. He locked Stefan in the safe and dropped him in the lake.

Here's an interview with Julie. She and Caroline Dries wrote the ep.

We chatted exclusively with executive producer/evil genius Julie Plec about the finale's shocking twists, including the decisions to make Stefan a doppelgänger and turn Katherine human. (Spoiler alert: She wasn't their first choice!) Plus, she dishes on Delena's "happy long-distance relationship," if Kat will be a regular next season and TVD: The college years!

Holy s--t, Stefan is a doppelgänger, Silas' doppelgänger to be exact! When did you make the decision to bring in another doppelgänger and why Stefan?
Last year after we wrapped season three, some of the writers and I stayed on for an extra five weeks talking about story for season four. We knew that we wanted to give Stefan and give Paul Wesley specifically an opportunity to sort of spread his wings a bit more. He did such a good job playing Ripper Stefan, so we wanted to play a long-foiled plan into motion that we weren't sure if we'd get to it before the end of the season or not; we always had it in our back pocket to reveal it right around the time it felt right. The way it played out we chose not to reveal it until the last beat of the last episode basically teeing up what season five would be.

We can only imagine how excited Paul Wesley was when he found out about this twist.
Yes, Paul loves to play the bad buy and unfortunately for him, Stefan, more often than not, is a true-blue hero. Obviously, he had this wonderful arc as the Ripper and he's plagued by his own demons, but when all's said and done he's still very much the straight man. Getting the opportunity to dig into this and really stretch and exercise his muscles as an actor I think just made him really happy; it's exciting for him as an actor to play with a new character.

So will we learn more about the Salvatore family history in season five, maybe about the brothers' mother?
We've just gotten started talking about season five, but one of the things we're talking about it definitely learning more about the history of the Salvatore family. I would say that at this point the things we don't know yet are fair game.

Can you tease what Silas will be up to when he's posing as Stefan in season five?
Silas is going to come roaring into season five with an agenda. His mission has been singular from the beginning, which is he wants to take the cure and die and get rid of the other side so he can pass on and be reunited with his one true love. However, the cure's off the table, the other side's off the table, so he's going to have a pretty enormous plan B for how to deal with that.

As for the other brother, he didn't get to be a doppelgänger, but he did get the girl! So what's next for Damon and Elena?
Next for them as a couple is a long-distance relationship as Elena heads off to her new life at college and Damon sticks behind In Mystic Falls to hold down the fort. We get to see them happy, believe it or not, for a little while before of course circumstances and other supernatural influence comes in to drive an obstacle in their past. There's something that we rarely get to do on TVD, is see a couple enjoy being a couple and we're definitely going to have our fun with Elena and Damon, who have taken so much time to find their way to each other really and truly. So we're going to be able to enjoy that for a while.

Katherine being the one to take the cure was also a huge shocker and we heard you originally planned on giving it to another character. Can you say who it was and why the switch?
Interestingly enough, when Kevin [Williamson] and I, back in season zero, when we first launched the series and started talking about knowing that one day we'd make Elena a vampire and with that move would come the realization that there was a cure. I think in the back of our heads we always intended to heal Elena. But the instant that we actually made the decision to move forward with Elena the first thing we realized was she would of course be the one person we couldn't cure because it was just too easy.

Instantly, we decided that the person that needed to be cured, that made the most sense from a story point of view, that would be a great surprise, would be Damon. We believed that because of all people he's the one that said he missed being human, but he's also the one who relished the most being a vampire. Well, about five minutes into the season, right after the cure was revealed to be in existence, I think I read instantly someone was like, ‘Oh, they're going to cure Damon.' I thought, ‘Oh shit!' [Laughs.]

Ultimately, the person that we cured we wanted to get really great story out of it and I think part of Damon's delightful charm as a vampire is that he is a vampire and I'm not so sure outside of the novelty of turning him human that we'd be able to get as much as we would have wanted to dramatically. We played around with a lot of other ideas for a little while before realizing the answer was so clear and so obvious and so right in front of us.

We're excited to see a human Katherine in season five; how will that play out?
Katherine is the one person on the planet who would hate to be human more than anything, who's always been a survivor and so fierce and such a fighter and now she is having to be vulnerable and killable, yet all of her evil deeds of the past coming home to roost. It's going to be great opportunity for story. Not only is she on the verge of getting her ass kicked every single episode, she's going to need protection and who better to seek out for protection than the brother Salvatore who have been so good at caring on and off for her over the centuries?

With Bonnie's death seemingly permanent, is Kat returning a series regular?
Kat will still be a regular, business as usual. She just now has the mother of all obstacles preventing her and Jeremy from being able to have the physical relationship that we've danced around for so long.

And finally, what will The Vampire Diaries' college years be like?
The best part about it is that we've got a town that we've very firmly established and the university that we've established with Whitmore College, which is not in Mystic Falls, but certainly close enough than you can roll home on a Saturday and do a load of laundry. What's exciting is to create a whole new world and new characters and new friends and new foes for those who go to college and also be able to integrate what's going on at college back into what's going on home, so we never feel like we've left behind the Mystic Falls universe we know and love so much.

Convoluted is an understatement. I loved LOST for six yeas and never had a problem following any of it, despite people liking to make a big deal that it was so serialized. THIS show, on the other hand, is all about big shocking moments so logic is really sloppy.

They wasted Stefan all last season, though, so at the very least this should bring him back into the picture even though I'm not at all thrilled this is another case of evil-wearing-a-main-character-face. They've played that card too much.

Wow. So, basically this is exactly what I was afraid of. The writers KNEW that giving the cure to Damon would be the best choice for the story, but they freaked out when they realized someone might--gasp--be able to predict that outcome. So their decision making isn't based on what's best for the story but what will be most "shocking". (Seriously, it wasn't as shocking as Julie thinks; you can be predictably shocking.)

In stories only hearts can tell
I, for one, am glad Katherine took the cure.

It seems so much more interesting than a plain, old, human Damon... He would hate being vulnerable, and left behind, and not being able to protect Elena. He would get angry in no time and turn back into a vampire in fifteen seconds or less. There's no surprise there. Nothing to look forward to.

But Katherine, on the other hand, has all the surprises up her sleeve. How will she take it? Will
she be mad? Will she try and turn back into a vampire? Will she adjust? Like it? There's no telling with her.

So, yeah. I really liked this turn of events.

Looks like Klaus will be back in the hybrid business now. :) He's got himself another doppleganger (Katherine).

I think Katherine has no choice but to run (unless Silas needs her for something). The idea amuses me greatly.

Nah, it's in a different interview that Klaus won't be jumping on the hybrid bandwagon too soon after how it turned out the last time. Plus, he's busy in New Orleans.

angeliz2k, Damon wasn't the best choice - because he got the Cure in the books. It was a terribly predictable choice. Like Violeta says, Katherine being human has a lot more possibilities. A lot more unknowns. There was nothing in it for Damon to take the Cure at this point, not when Elena is a vampire. When she was human, yeah, but not now.

Hm, well, I still think that I, as a writer, would have gone with Damon. Katherine should be interesting, though I don't know where they're going with it. It's probably a redemption arc. But how will that really affect our core three? I don't see either of the boys getting back together with her (she is, after all, still crazy-ass Katherine and will probably be even more desperate now that she's weak). There may be a thaw between Katherine and Elena, since Katherine is no longer a threat, but . . . again, I feel it doesn't challenge any of our core three to change in any way.

But, obviously, it's not my show and I'm happy to go along for the ride. It will certainly be interesting!

Refresh my memory, is it only the blood of a doppelganger that is needed for hybrids? If that's accurate, that means that Stefan could now be a blood bank if/when Klaus does go back to creating hybrids, right?

Klaus basically has to vamp a werewolf and feed them the doppelganger blood to turn them into a hybrid. But it might still be confined to a Petrova doppelganger since the Petrova doppelganger was entwined in the spell that buried his wolf side, and released it. And Elena's not a doppelganger anymore now she's a vampire.

Following the same rule, Stefan ceased to be a doppelganger when he was turned, too.

I can't much contribute to this thread because I'm in the UK and several episodes behind. But that Scottish accent attempt in episode 23 was totally painful. Like one eye closed "Uuuugh!" painful. Kind of offensively painful. But I'll do my best to get over it. :D

First: yeahhhhh, Vampire Diaries thread!!!!!!!

Okay, now to the real business. Julie Plec spends too much time on Tumblr and Twitter to actually care about her plots. I don't necessarily think giving it to Damon would be the best solution, but still she shouldn't have decided otherwise just because everyone saw that coming.

I also feel that Elena choosing Damon at this moment has more to do with the fans than the story itself (at least after all the sirebond crap). Her speech was awful.

Wow. So, basically this is exactly what I was afraid of. There are spoilers on how one of the Salvatore will take Katherine under his wing. I don't think it's going to be Damon, but Silas/Stefan, maybe he has an idea on how to get the cure of her system or whatever.

How is that going to affect the triangle? Who knows? Elena will get jealous at some point because Katherine is human and she isn't anymore (she still wanted to be human, right?)?

I hated the finale, so I still need a while to get used to what happened.
