Pretty cool rejection from $tupefying $tories. Was hoping for a sale, but I'll take any decent news these days: "Sorry, but after holding this one over for three reads, I'm going to pass on it. We like it a lot -- one of the readers said, "Oh hell, just buy this one" -- but it's simply not right for us at this time."

Wow, high praise indeed for a rejection! So close...

Thanks for the commiserations, Eliza and Marzioli. :D

And commiserations on all the real R's everyone, especially for the stories that came close. (Nice personal, Sai, and missing by a hair's breadth from the sound of it, Marzioli.)

A 37-ish day rejection from Waylines. Said: We thought this had an interesting potential, but we did feel that the voice and style could still use a further degree of uniqueness to make the story really stand out.

Meh. I think Apex is open again. Maybe I'll try it there.

My second form rejection from Sword and Sorceress was less than 24 hours. Here's to hoping for next year. Happy Mother's Day to those that it applies :)

First round 12-day R from Waylines. They didn't like the pacing, thought a lot of the down time should have been trimmed and tightened. However, "We enjoyed your main character, and thought her development was interesting and engaging ... [And] the imagery felt very real and interesting." All in all, one of the more complimentary R's I've gotten from them.

Form from Lore at 27 days.

1-day R from Clarkesworld.

(Not all on the same day--I've been saving them up over the last week).

21 days to a round 2 "close but no cigar" rejection from Sword & Sorceress, and a month to a form R from Buzzy.

Must find half an hour to get everything back out on submission later this week...

Has Lore suddenly gotten faster? It seems like they were over ninety days for awhile.

Definitely. From the rumors I heard, they have a bigger slush team now. My last three subs have been rejected at 29, 31 and 27 days.

18-day form R from Daily Science Fiction. I'm thinking of sending it to F&SF next, but I know the first bit needs re-working first.

Two day-ish rejection from The Colored Lens. The first reader said he bounced it off the editorial board, but they decided it didn't "differentiate" enough from other zombie stories.

And a second-round rejection from S&S28: I really like this story, and I hoped that I'd be able to include it in the anthology. Unfortunately, I have more good stories than I can use, and I can't fit this one in. Try it on another market, and I hope that you will submit again next year.

Looks to me like a form, but nice enough, I suppose. Time to try another market.

Aggy, has three stories to send back out

I know some of you submit and have been rejected from The Colored Lens. The editor Daniel Scott did a guest blog for me today talking about how many of the stories are excellent and goes into the writing process from start to finish. I thought some of you might be interested: Daniel Scott Guest Blog.

A 17-day lovely final round R from Penumbra, and a 58-day form from Shock Totem.
My rejections arrive in twos lately...

87-day personal from Every Day Fiction on possibly the strangest story I've ever written. It was received with a lot more enthusiasm than I expected, so that's a plus :)

Condolences on this week's rejections. I got two to make an extra special Mother's Day. I didn't tell my husband until the end of the day, and he said I was taking rejection a lot better these days because he had no idea. So that's a win :) Keep writing!

Argh, I just realized I made a mistake in my submission to Cricket (didn't include an exact wordcount, only an approximate one). Do you think that's an instant rejection? Should I just withdraw it to save myself the 3-month wait? Am I overreacting?

I wouldn't worry about it (though I know that's easy for me to say, harder for the person who actually has the sub out ;) ).

If they're even moderately sane, they won't reject you just for that.

Probably close to 40% of UFO subs break the guidelines in SOME way. I just shrug it off unless its really egregious. Most editors do the same.
