Brady, so sorry. It's the first thing I think of when there is a fire or a storm.
This won't help with the investigation part, or the animals who didn't make it. There's nothing for that. But, since you've got kids to grab too, this might make your cats a little safer. Have you thought of training them to go into their carriers on command? (treats work well for this.)
If they get along you could use two large carriers.
I didn't do it, never thought of it until current kitty. When the dog says run and hide she does. Which is good for burglars but not fires.
When the weather alarm goes off she runs into her carrier and waits to be carried to basement. We've done it enough in her short life that she's figured out the alarm and the pattern.
She sleeps in her carrier and gets a handful of dry food and 6 treats to make going to bed more fun.
