Cheering you all on!
No romance as a genre, or no romance at all?

That's the wording I have, but Katrina will be doing a post tomorrow on Operation Awesome and it might have more details. I"m thinking it's romance as a genre, since it's rare for YA to not even have a hint of romance, even if it's unfulfilled.

That's what I was thinking, but I thought it'd be good to clarify

I'm doing a Coraline book giveaway over at my blog here. You must follow me and leave a comment to the post to enter. Also, since I'm gifting this book, you have to own either a Kindle or some device that can read Kindle books.

There is a Pitch contest going on May 28th, 2013 8am-8pm on Twitter. Type your pitch with the hashtag #PitMad. I'm pretty sure that's all accurate... just check out that hashtag if you have questions.

(I've been unsuccessful at the ones so far because pitches come fast and furious, BUT a lot of success stories do come from here so I thought I'd share. :])

Like a Virgin - Contest for NEWBIE WRITERS! - July 12 2013

The Like a Virgin Contest will open on July 12, 2013.

It is co-organized by Rhiann Wynn-Nolet and Kristina Perez, critique partners who met last summer during an online contest. This summer they want to give back to the writing community by hosting a contest for unagented writers in the YA/NA categories.

Since this is a Like a Virgin contest, the organizers decided to make it open only to manuscripts that have yet to go through the online contest trenches. They want your fresh, sparkly and new manuscripts. Ones that will be touched for the very first time.

Get your toes wet and compete for the chance to have your work reviewed by an agent as well as prizes of valuable manuscripts critiques!

In addition, there will be a "Getting to Know You" blog hop where Rhiann and Kristina are sure you'll meet wonderful CPs and Beta Readers just like they did. They're also lining up a roster of Guest Stars who will bring you insightful posts about "firsts" in writing and querying.

Email us with questions at: [email protected]

Eligibility
  • You must be unagented
  • Your MS must be either YA or NA only
  • The MS you enter in "Like a Virgin" must NOT have previously been entered in any other contests (we will check) but normal querying is okay.
  • Note: you may have entered other contests in the past but it must NOT have been with the same MS
How It Works
Round 1
We will accept 50 entries on a first come first serve basis.
There will be 5 judges (agented writers) who will each pick 2 entries for
Round 2

In the interest of fairness, all judging in Round 1 will be anonymous and the Organizers will not be among the judges. Look out for judges Vogue, Bad Girl, La Isla Bonita, Boderline, and Lucky Star!

Round 2
  • The 10 finalists selected by the Round 1 judges will have a week to revise their pitches before the agent round
  • During Round 2 participating agents can request as much or as little of contestant manuscripts as they desire
  • The Round 2 judges will also award "cherries" to their favorite entries
  • The contestants who receive the most "cherries" will be placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th will receive assorted prizes of manuscript crits
  • So, not only will finalists have their pitches reviewed by agents, they'll also compete for manuscript critiques that are worth their weight in gold!

HOW TO ENTER

  • Provided you meet the eligibility criteria, entry will be on a first come first serve basis.
  • There is no entry fee.
  • Entry will open on 12 July 2013 at 6am EST. Entries received before the designated date will be automatically deleted unread.
  • It will remain open until we reach 50 contestants.
  • Entries should be emailed to: lvcon13 @ gmail dot com [please note that it's a normal email address, we're just spelling it out so that we don't get attacked by spambots!]
Formatting
SUBJECT of your email should be: GENRE - TITLE - Your Name

The email itself should be single spaced without any personalization. For example:

LA ISLA BONITA
NA Contemporary Romance
85K

Query:
Correctly formatted query.

First 250:
Your first 250 words formatted correctly.

So the prize is the chance to have your work reveiwed by an agent? Will the work be given to the right agent for the genre so there's a chance it will be picked up? Or will it just be by *an agent*. Will you be publishing the names of the agents that will be reviewing the winning work?

Hi! Sorry to be slow to respond. We have 6 agents and they're now listed on the contest website. We will reveal which agents are associated with which prizes on Monday. All of the details of how the prizes are calculated are on the website. Agents are also free to request from pitches, of course.

Hope to see you there!
