Can anyone direct me to a good list or make some suggestions of who I should start looking at now? TMG was my first query submission and I'm not really sure who I should move on to while I wait. Any help would be awesome. TIA

You just have to start doing your research. Agentquery and Querytracker are both good places to start, but overwhelming if you haven't narrowed it down at all. Look in the acknowledgments of comparable books to see who those authors are represented by (or Google to find the same info). Notice which agency threads on this page are constantly at the top. Google to find what agents rep your genre. The Internet is your friend. :)

Also, QueryTracker.com. As its name suggests, it also provides a way of keeping track of your queries.

And if you can afford the $25 a month, Publisher's Marketplace is a good source for seeing whether an agent is actively selling and who they are selling to.

Hi Joy,

Congratulations on submitting to TMG, they're fantastic. I signed with them a couple months ago, and have released my books as part of their eBook program. They're very helpful, friendly and professional. I still pinch myself from time to time (like, every hour). I wish you the best of luck.

I had a full requested by Trident just over a month ago. They wanted a signed copy of the reader release returned with the MS but the release didn't say that they wanted an exclusive and neither did they ask for one in the requesting email.

Since most of my experience is with short stories, I'm confused by this from Trident's submissions page:

We do not accept simultaneous-submissions that have been sent to other publishing agents.
Surely this doesn't mean that I can't query them if I have outstanding queries with other agencies, does it? In this age of "No response means no" and waiting four to six months for a response I can't see any agency wanting exclusive queries. Any thoughts on this?

ETA; D'oh! It was buried on the previous page, post #784: Don't sim sub to other agents at Trident. That makes tons more sense. I had heard you should only query one agent at an agency anyway.

Yikes, Chris. I don't remember reading that. I have queried multiple agents since getting the full request from Trident...

Well, I haven't signed on the dotted line yet, but received an offer of representation from Trident today. I have to admit, I fell head over heels for the agent and am very excited.

Congrats!!!

May I ask how long it took to get an offer of rep from the time you emailed your full manuscript?

Just query them at the same time as everyone else - how are they going to know? If by chance they offer you rep and someone else has it get on to those people fast unless you are happy with Trident. If they offer you rep at the same time as or after someone else then you can just say you changed your mind without giving a reason. It is possible to say no to an agent's offer of representation.

Queried one agent yesterday and received a request for my full MS today from another agent at Trident who is a better fit. I'm a non-fiction writer and I have a proposal prepared- this is the first time it hasn't been requested. My husband was wary about the waiver, but I'm happy to see all is well and good.

I'm excited- but not for the long wait!

Been dealing with a bit of frustration here and I'm not sure what etiquette dictates at this point.

I got a full request from Alex Glass's assistant back in February and sent it along.

I gave a nudge at three months by email. Heard nothing. Gave another nudge about a month later through the form. Again, heard nothing.

Subsequently rewrote massive passages of the manuscript and nudged by the online form. Still no reply.

Suggestions?

If you've already checked in, there isn't much you CAN do. Do you have a direct e-mail address for either Mr. Glass or his assistant? If so, I'd try that; it's really easy for online forms to slip between the cracks. If not, you probably just have to wait (which totally stinks).

I do think you deserve an answer and subscribe to the Nathan Bransford rules of query etiquette, which state that you can--and should--follow up on requested material once a month for time immemorial. (That's once a month after the first four months, I should probably clarify.) Agents don't take no-response-means-no on their submissions to editors, so they shouldn't be able to get away with a no-response-means-no policy on their requested material, either.

Thanks for the advice, Krista. I'll probably do just that

I wish Nathan Bransford was still agenting. I used to stalk him pretty frequently.

Wizera, there are agents who do not respond to fulls. I have had it happen several times.

I am represented by TMG. Can't give too many details now, but it did not take long to get the full request and representation from my agent. I'll share more if I get a book deal or no deal.

I am wondering if anyone here has been represented by TMG and did not get a book deal, and if so what your experience with them was. Also, if you went with their e-book deal, I'd be curious as to whether they did anything to promote/market the book.

I have a TMG agent, and my book, which he shopped around about 2 years ago, did not sell. Some interesting things have gone on in the meantime. I was accepted for their e-book department for a 10-yr.-old, previously published novel that had gone out of print. Then, I (privately) got a couple of publisher offers for digital rights to the same book. TMG was not intersted in negotiating a digital deal so I did it myslef and went with a small publisher. I always informed the TMG agent and he was happy to "allow" me to do this. He has also "allowed" me to go with another, British, agent for the foreign rights to that book and all other novels of mine they might publish.

The book he has is non-fiction, and I also have a couple pf memoirs I hope can be published one day. Those will go through TMG, as my small-pub is only for fiction. So, I can say he has been very flexible throughout all this.

So practically I have two agents, TMG for non-fiction and memoirs (if they ever sell), and my British small-pub for foreign rights to novels. I think it's a good arrangement.

I am a new member and a new writer...So I'm just getting into submissions. One thing I have already realized: a person could (literally) age 10 years waiting to get an agent. I am SOOO not going to fall for the etiquette bs. I plan on submitting to as many agents as possible (those that fit my criteria), and--unless an actual contract negotiation is in effect--I have no qualms with contacting other agents, or with nudging.
