Ok, throwing this one out to the collective massives here.
I have a MacBook, running 10.8.3, though I encountered the problem on my prior, more antiquated OS as well.
I - or more properly my computer - seems to have lost the ability to differentiate between compressed .rar files and the "meant to be read as is" .cbr files.
I know the two are the same, and that you can rewrite a .cbr extension as an .rar extension and essentially create an openable archive of all the pages inside the .cbr file, but, and this is the catch, they are different files and obviously I use different programs with them.
I used to be able to differentiate them without problems. I had one program that would open the .rar files (a couple actually, because the archive utilities overlap some) and another that would read the .cbr files. Both had their own little icons they'd put in front of the file name, much as with any other document that is dedicated to a particular piece of software.
Only now, if I tell the computer "use this program as the default for the .cbr files" it also makes it the default for the .rar files.
And vice versa.
I use a program called Drawn Strips Reader for the .cbr files. I used to use another program, but that did not work with the upgrade to the new OS. (Wow did it ever not work. I have never seen a Mac crash as spectacularly as mine did.)
For the .rar files it doesn't matter if I assign them to UnrarX or Stuffit Expander. Both lead to the same issue.
This is obviously not a crippling issue. I can open the other files by selecting them and going to the menu and choosing "Open With."
But I'd really like to have it back where I can just click on the file and they will open correctly using the correct program.
Is this fixable, or is the similarity between the two extensions just doomed to perplex my laptop?
... I feel like this is one of those "Please Help" letters that gets anonymized in magazines under headings like "Perplexed in PA" or something.
