I have a home office, I write in there most of the time. I recently rearranged some rooms and put a writing desk in my bedroom. It's very cozy and great for late night writing.

I mostly write on my laptop. I had a netbook I loved and adored, but it died a horrible death when it was only 15 months old. So I went back to a regular sized laptop.

I don't have a specific place I write. I just write whenever I have time and ideas which means I spent a lot of time ignoring lectures and writing while I pretended to take notes this year. This is weird but I also write while watching cop shows a lot so USA marathons are great for me.

We're renting a teeny house, so I made myself a standing desk by stacking empty cookie tins on one corner of the dining table. If Mr. Putt has the TV on too loud, I snarl at him and he puts on his headphones.

The house we'll be moving into next year has a separate study, but I think I'll feel too lonely to use it. I like being able to prowl and pounce on Mr. Putt when I get stuck on a difficult section.

At the moment I sit at a desk in the spare room surrounded by baby paraphernalia (little boy due in 6 weeks!), using my laptop. At the moment it is my (to use my partners affectionate term) "pit", but when the little fella comes along I may have to find another hole to crawl into.

Away with family for the bank holiday weekend. People are mostly watching lousy TV so I'm trying to write on my laptop on the sofa (so not to be unsociable of course), but constantly distracted by jingly adverts, people's reactions to jingly adverts and general shit-chat and so on. Distracted. Unfocused. Not happening.

So I'm on here instead!

These days, I mostly write at my small desk in a corner of the bedroom, which is under a window. My back recently went kerplooey, though, and the desk chair I have isn't cutting it anymore. I need to shell out for something with lumbar support so I can sit for more than 30 minutes at a time. These days I alternate between sitting in the chair and lying on the floor with the computer under the desk.

I also write at other places in the house, like the kitchen table, or in bed, but I'd prefer to do more writing out of the house, in cafes, or at the library, where there are fewer distractions (i.e., no children, housework, husband, or parents, ideally also no phone or internet).

I am very lucky. I have a whole room to myself. My husband outfitted it with a big computer desk, bookshelves, filing cabinet, two monitors, I love it. Can't write with a lot of distractions, can barely get it done in solitude.

I do most of my writing on my regular computer setup, a desktop in the corner of my bedroom.

While away from the computer, I carry a pen and scrap paper to jot down ideas or snippets of prose. I do the same for non-writing notes. I fold a 8 1/2" by 11" sheet of paper into eighths - easy to fit into my pocket, easier to use than random scrap paper. I type that stuff up when I get back to the computer, although I sometimes don't process my handwritten notes as quickly as I'd like.
