Hi everyone! I haven't been around for the last month because I was giving just about EVERY second I had to finishing a 40k MG for camp nano (which I did, yay!) But now I can breathe. phew. Except not really, because REVISIONS!

So my question is about topic matter in MG. (I know this is a theme that comes up frequently, but I haven't seen this particular question, so bear with me if it's repetitive, I'm sorry!)

The story started and was going to have a light bullying incident but by the time I finished there's a bullying incident because a kid is thought to be gay. Then his parents admit him to the hospital because they are worried he is suicidal. He is not the MC, nor are these events drawn out or described in detail. The story is how the MC deals with this happening to a fellow classmate. In the end, he raises support for this kid, stands up to the bullies, blah blah blah, no surprises there.

The tone is still very MG but is that as a topic too much, even for older MG? Anyone have thoughts? I mean, this is a topic that kids in middle school are dealing with, more and more these days, but I'm having a hard time finding anything similar that isn't YA. Anyone have any thoughts or examples of something similar?

Just my opinion, but if MG-age kids can't deal with that storyline they had better turn off the TV completely. And not go to any movies.

I would think it's fine for older MG.

When reading the premise, I automatically thought of Wonder too. It has a serious topic that is very well handled. It also helped that it was from a child's point of view.

I don't think there are many topics that are too serious for mg. Children have to deal with the world too. It is all in the execution.

Thanks guys, those are great comparisons, I had thought of wonder but not my sister lives on the mantelpiece.

I've seen lots of serious topics covered, but it usually doesn't "feel" real, because it's more adventure-y in MG. Thanks for the contemporary examples.
