Time for agent to respond to proposal?

Hi all--

I was fortunate to have an agent, and then he suddenly/abruptly retired, just as the proposal was going out.

So I immediately started querying agents and told them the situation. I send out the query in batches of 10, and I currently have seven (7) agents who have asked for the proposal. [All agents were "vetted" so no scams!]

Since this is an odd position to be in, I was wondering if anyone has been in this situation and if there is an "average" length of time for the agent to read the proposal? The know the proposal is currently at 5 houses and I know this is all a waiting game.

Previously, I had 3 agents interested and they all responded in a few days. (This was a couple years ago.) Since then, it seems agents now simply don't bother responding to queries when a couple years ago, they would at least say no thanks.

So I was wondering: Do agents go as far as to request proposals and if the answer is no, never tell you? Any rough guess as to how long it takes for them to respond to a proposal? I look at this as a bit different from a query since they are interested enough to say they want to commit to a reading a proposal.

Thanks for any answers/experience!

How long have you waited? I'd say if it's been more than say, 6-weeks, contact them again. Just a quick and polite, "Just want to be sure you received my proposal..." email will do. Offer to resend it, if they need that. If you still don't hear anything, move on.

Things like this often get caught in the editor's spam folder. If they haven't remembered to put you in their "acceptable" emails, and there's an attachment, it'll go straight to spam. That's why it's a good idea to recheck.

Also, just an idea, but if you had a reputable agent, it seems you could ask him to write you a short recommendation to include in your queries.

Best of everything, Karen

Thanks, Karen--appreciate the feedback/advice. When I send the query out and get a response within a day or two asking for the proposal, I--of course!--assume they set everything aside to read it! 6 weeks is a good span of time. Thanks again.

Just an additional two cents here. I have been working as a series acquisitions editor for an academic publisher and I have a standard agreement for communication with every author that my publisher contracts for my series . That includes a 48 hour maximum response time for emails related to the book project. I considered it a matter of respect. Now, as I query and submit, I find myself wishing it were a professional standard.
