Congrats again, winners! And many, many thanks to our donors. Also, thanks to all the voters. We couldn't have a contest without you! :D

Of the non-winners, I have to single Ruth out - I absolutely loved yours - I think that is a manuscript you need to show your agent. I didn't even need the illustration notes. As someone who reads a lot of picture books, I immediately could envision the possibilities. Kudos!

Ruth got my top vote, too. The picture book is delightful and she clearly knows what she's doing. She presented it exactly as you would a PB submission to an agent or an editor. In case anyone reading this thread is new to children's books (and particularly picture books), we'll have a quick educational moment: unless you're a professional artist/illustrator, you don't submit the pictures with your manuscript. You provide illustration notes only when it's absolutely necessary to add clarity to the writing. The publisher will choose the illustrator and the illustrator will have as much freedom as the writer (the illustrator has complete control over the visual aspects of the story; the writer gets everything else. Picture books are a collaborative effort between the writer and the illustrator).

All of the contest's winning entries were well-written, of course. I think Jed and sissy should both work on expanding their entries into full-length books! :D

Of the non-winners, I felt The Bone Code Club and Hooked were both well-written and had appropriate MG-voice and could definitely be expanded into successful novels. Jaq and the Wormhole and Proof that Big Pieces are really nothing special were wonderfully creative -- and well-written.

Several others were very good, as well, but the stories above stood out most to me.

Great job everyone! :TheWave:

Very fun contest and a good learning opportunity. I'd never seen how picture book manuscript are formatted.

I wrote Fantastical Mechanicals set roughly in a rural setting of a steampunk story I am plotting.

The Vagabond and The Skeleton Key was mine, and it's formatting irked the hell outta me, too. I resubmitted it to Smish and even that came out weird! Not her fault, I'm sure my browser was sabotaging my efforts :p

As for the sorry itself, it's a greatly altered version of an old NaNo project - it originally had the MC attacked by outer-dimensional lizardmen, when the Vagabond appears from a portal opening in an alleyway and dispatches them with a magic sabre. Oh, and the door originally led to the storm-lashed deck of a galleon being attacked by a Kraken, which was where the Vagabond went from being a sea captain to time-travelling guardian.....

But yeah, having to cut it down around the part where the key makes his appearance severely impacted it's chances.

That and the formatting.

Congrats to all the winners! I voted for some of you!!

I was out of town yesterday and missed the big reveal! :(

But super congratulations to Gail, Sissy, and Jed. You guys totally deserved it!

I didn't vote for you. :scared:

But all yours were in my pool of top picks I had to then randomly choose from. I'm also glad to see a few others in the upper voting tiers from that pool. It's nice to know that my eye tends toward the popular vote. (I pretend it means I've got good taste and can spot marketability ;) )

Anyway, competition was fierce, so you guys should be super proud. You did a fantastic job! Everyone, in fact, did a wonderful job.

Thanks so much for sharing your writing, guys, and thank you, Smish, for organizing the contest!

What an excellent story -- in both cases. The realness explains why I kept coming back to it. I musta sniffed out the genuine and that (along with the good writing and central conundrum) is what made it impossible for me to ignore.

Congratulations! Not just to the winners but also to all the entrants. I had so much fun reading (and re-, and re-, and re-reading :D) and voting. I loved so many of them.

OT, but I love hearing the stories behind the stories too.

Kitty is a good writer. She won the contest once before. :)

I enjoyed reading all of the entrants offerings and it was fun voting too. Congratulations to all of you... good job! Gotta say, I especially loved 'Molly Todd.'
