Is there an easy way to search the forum for topics?

I try to look before I post to make sure the same topic hasn't been started already but that proves to be a difficult task in any thread.

I usually use the Google Custom Search bar.

Scroll down until you find the box labeled Posting Rules on the left side of this page. You'll find it just below Posting Rules.

At the top of each thread is a "search" function for the thread

There is a similar tool for each sub-forum. Google only returns what it finds, and it doesn't continuously search for instances of a particular word (and, in all honesty, using Google can be pretty hit and miss).

I was going to say exactly what BigWords said, except I'm going to use a few more commas, as I like them, because I do, that's why, and you don't always need a full stop, commas are great.

1. Use the Advanced Search options on AW if you are searching for a thread or post that you know exists.

  • AW search is limited by the size of the index, which means you won't have much luck searching for small words (less than four letters) or really common words.
  • No search will return more than 500 hits.
  • You might have better luck searching on thread titles, than keyword posts.
  • The more carefully you consider your query, the better your results. If, for instance, you're looking for a post about a grammar or usage issue, try limiting your search to the Basic Writing and Grammar forums.

2. For more thorough searching on key words, use the Google Search box on the bottom left.

  • Google bots crawl the forums, and the site, at about seven minute intervals.
  • As Admin for the server, I generate an xml index that assures that bots index even archived threads, including search bots from Google, Bing, and Yahoo.

3. Password protected forums like SYW are not searched by search bots that are legit; like Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.

Also be advised that searching for certain magic phrases will result in a loss of punctuation; this is related to the issue of byte sex and the necessity to purge members on a regular basis.

So, if I don't byte when performing a pleasurable, recreational activity, then I'll be purged from the database?
