I was wondering, are the ages of 18-20 generally considered stretching it for a YA short story?

My main character is eighteen at the moment, but her sister is 19, and her boyfriend is twenty.

Yes, stretching it a bit, but I don't think it'd do any harm in a commercial sense.

Is your MC still in high school, or has she graduated and moved on with her life?

Depending on that and on the themes of the story, it might be New Adult or even adult rather than YA. Age is not the only determining factor, though in general, yes, 18 and up would be stretching it, in my opinion.

Yup, this.

If you want to be certain your story fits in YA, and it won't affect your story, I'd play it safe and age them down. But you've also got to consider if the other aspects of the story fit.

I'm currently reading The Indigo Spell (Richelle Mead) which is considered YA. The MC is 18 or 19 and the Love Interest is 22 (I think). Mostly though it's probably the themes that categorize it as YA.

You might want to look into the New Adult category. Depending on your tone and your themes, your book might be at home there.

I'll look into New Adult. Becky has just graduated, and the break up was just post graduation. Basically she's coping with her post graduation break up, and trying to move on with her life by going on vacation.

Oh and her age isn't stated directly, its sort of implied by her ex being currently nineteen.

I dunno if this will help, but I've adjusted the ages of the four sisters who are the MCs of my series.

Right now, the two oldest who are twins are 20, the middle girl is 17, and the youngest one is 15 years old. All four siblings have a major role in the storyline, so I don't think it hurts much to have the twins be twenty years olds.

Plus, since their mother remarried several years later, there is a younger brother who is about 12. So, the ages vary in my series.

It's probably also the fact that the series it's a spin-off from (Vampire Academy) is YA, and there are crossover characters? (Could be wrong, I've never read either series). Same with how The Piper's Son is about adults but it's categorized as YA because it's a sequel to Saving Francesca.

I think you're partially right. A lot of characters are from the VA series, but only one of them is still a minor (I think)... And she's a secondary character. Most of the characters are, however, enrolled in High School and romance-wise there's a lot of first love, first relationship, first kisses sort of stuff.

Some of my characters are 17-19, and I have thought about their ages, but I don't think I would ever consider aging them down. My characters are the age they are for a reason. I suppose if you is true for you JustSarah then I don't think it should be a problem. While young adult does suggest the characters should be younger, it doesn't necessarily mean they have to be. 20 is pushing at the edge. 25 is overdoing it, lol.

The main character viewpoint is actually eighteen, although this might not be obvious for third person viewpoint.

Oh by the way, I hopes it not an issue I don't info dump what they are wearing. I mostly hint at what they are wearing by only mentioning one or two aspects of what they wear.

Well since it is a book, you might want to make things a bit more descriptive, but other than that, I can't see how it would matter whether or not you tell us everything about what they're wearing.

Actually I'm not sure if it's going to be a short story or book. It was originally intended as the first short in a connected short collection.

OK short story finished. I just need to find a YA Zine. Although I'm not sure if YA zine would take New Adult. (The main POV is a high school graduate of 18.)
