Waiting for Ms. Forland also

Hi all - I am new to the forum but have been following this thread for over a month. I queried Emily Forland with a children's book over a month ago and received a polite and professional request for a full manuscript the next day (wow, amazing time!). I have been on pins and needles since then. The manuscript underwent a drastic rewrite and I also finished the second book in the series in the meantime so I updated her by e-mail and she requested me to send those along as well. Nothing but professionalism so far on her end so I am hopeful. . . she seems great, I just hope I am not in this purgatory for much longer!

Anyone got any recent interaction to report with any of the agents at Wendy Weil? Emily's had my partial since 9/5 and there was no indication of what the expected TAT would be in her email so just wondering if I can expect to wait the full, agonising 3 months that is supposed to be standard. Hate waiting!!! ;)

Still waiting....Emily's had my synopsis and first 3 chapters for nearly 3 months now. About a month ago I emailed her saying I'd had some detailed feedback from another agent which mostly concerned the ending of the novel. I had made some changes on the basis of these comments which didn't really make much difference to the first three chapters that I had sent Emily but they did affect the plot synopsis I had sent her, so I attached slightly revised versions of both.

She didn't reply but I assume she got them ok since they didn't bounce back and she was able to get my initial query...

But, TBH, I'm getting to the point now where I don't really mind the waiting as long as you *know* there is some kind of end in sight, but when it gets to be three months on a short partial, you've nudged and heard nothing...you begin to just see tumbleweeds followed by a no response means no thanks kind of rejection drifting by...eep!!

Anyone else in the same boat as me??

Emma Patterson

I sent a query to Emma Patterson today via e-mail and received a request for a partial within the hour.

Now the partial is sent (first 50 pages) and I'm waiting, though I imagine the time-lag will be a little more than an hour this time.

BTW, I submitted a 90K YA contemporary fantasy.

Well, submitted my new novel to Emma Patterson and yesterday received a request for the full. She remembered my last submission to her (apparently fondly) which was exciting. As usual, I'll update once a response is received.

This was a 72K YA contemporary fantasy.

UPDATE: Ended up another rejection, but again the rejection was positive and Emma was (again) a pleasure to deal with. Reason give for the rejection was that the pacing was slow and that wouldn't fly (probably) with YA readers.

If I get another novel out before getting an agent, she's definitely on my list to query again.

Does anyone have recent experience with Emily Forland? I queried her with my mystery 6 weeks ago and haven't heard anything. It's not a long time, but the reports on query responses, response times, etc. on the QT site are not encouraging. I read that she was out on maternity leave during spring 2011 and wonder if she has returned.

Thanks.

Sent an email query to Emily Forland on 7/13. Haven't heard anything yet, and I'm assuming I won't since the positive responses seem to be immediate. I'll post if I'm pleasantly surprised!

Sad news

From today's Publisher Lunch:
Wendy Weil, 72, died September 22 at her country home in West Cornwall, CT. Her career as an agent spanned more than 40 years and she was president of the Wendy Weil Literary Agency, which she founded in 1987, counting Rita Mae Brown, Andrea Barrett, Mark Helprin, Alice Walker, Anthony Doerr, Phillip Lopate, and Amity Gaige among the agency's clients. Donations in her name may be made to Teachers & Writers Collaborative. Plans for a memorial service will be announced in early fall. Emily Forland and Emma Patterson and long-time office manager Ann Torrago remain at the agency and plan to continue Wendy's legacy.

The agency's website doesn't appear to have been updated since Ms. Weil's passing.

I wanted to query Emily Forland, who I found on Query Tracker, but I've looked at her response times there, and it would appear that she's stopped answering queries, in spite of the above news item.

Does anyone have any update?

Thanks in advance.

From Publishers Lunch:

Emma Patterson and Emily Forland will join Brandt & Hochman as agents effective January 1. Both Patterson and Forland were previously with the Wendy Weil Agency, and were the two principal agents looking after the agency's business following Weil's death in September.
