Dabbling in playwriting, I have been looking at the formats for movie scripts, however they vary from site to site. Can anyone direct me to the proper script format?

Unlike screenplays, there is not a standard stage play format, plus the format is different in the UK than in the US.
I would suggest getting one of the free scriptwriting programs and using it to format your play. Those are fairly easy to learn to use since they don't have quite as many bells and whistles as Hollywood scriptwriting software.

alleycat said exacty what I would suggest. Find a free program (like Celtx) and learn that way. It does all the hard stuff for you
Storysense has a formatting guide which is good: http://www.storysense.com/docs/SPFormat.pdf You will find that particulars of script formatting can vary, but not the broad general rules. Don't use shooting scripts as guides because they can vary quite a bit from spec scripts (see http://filmschoolonline.com/sample_lessons/sample_lesson_format.htm ) Dave Trottier's The Screenwriter's Bible is a classic in how to format a script.
