If you ever need royalty free/CC-ID music this link (http://incompetech.com/m/c/royalty-free/) has a downloadable database categorized by both genre (e.g. jazz, contemporary, etc) and style (moody, epic, sad, etc). I’ve used it myself in creating trailers for my novels. Curious if anyone knows of similar links for CC-ID/free artwork or animation with a SF/off world/alien landscape theme. I’m creating a trailer for my new release FINAL SOLUTION and though I have a few images, I’d like to find some better ones.

For those who may not know, you don’t have to spend thousands to create a trailer. I’ve conducted experiments with four I made myself using free tools and uploaded to a dozen sites. Their main benefit has been in encouraging casual visitors into being potential buyers, least that’s been my experience. The ratio of visitors that exit my website via a buy source is significantly higher for those that view a trailer compared to those that did not. Took me about 2-3 days to create each one I’ve made and IMO they’ve been worth the investment of time. If ya want a sense of what’s possible making one yourself I’ve got examples on my website (Davisstories.com). Just click the TRAILER button near the top. They’re not sophisticated like those you’d pay a professional to create, and I’m sure individuals with graphic art or AV talent can do better, but they have helped in terms of promoting my books based on data I recorded across several months.

Once I finish editor comments and errata sheets on two upcoming releases I intend to prepare a short tutorial on how to make a trailer with free tools and music. I’ll share the article on a blog I do with 28 other authors and provide the link on AWC for those interested.

For now, any input on sites with free/CC-ID artwork or animation with a SF theme would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Just wanted to second your recommendation here. I love Kevin MacLeod's stuff. :D

Honestly, I haven't found any better free source, anywhere. I've found some decent stuff Googling "free dark ambient music" -- but it takes a looong time to sort through.

Mostly I stick with Incompetech. It's a great source, and someday when I'm rich I'm gonna donate like a thousand bucks to Kevin. :)

Oh... but for images, you might try Wikimedia Commons http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page (actually some really great stuff if you dig around), MorgueFile http://www.morguefile.com/ (ditto), and NASA images http://www.nasaimages.org/

What a helpful and interesting thread. Can anyone recommend some simple software/program to merge the music/images/video together to create a book trailer. I now have a trilogy that I need to push and would enjoy getting/creating a single trailer for it.

Great resources - thanks guys!

You can customise and download an ambient background here:

Be sure to read the FAQs for details on commercial use etc.

Dodge - if you check the trailers on my site, I made thus using Moviemaker but edited the sound track using audicity (free but takes some time to learn). The sound editor allows me to cut and splice the music and my voice track before I upload into Moviemaker.
