The only major legal action like this that I've seen recently is The Oatmeal vs FunnyJunk, which got crazy weird because FunnyJunk (a site that hosted most of The Oatmeal's comics without permission or credit) is the one who did the suing. If you care about the legal details (I found the articles interesting), Lowering The Bar covers the entire matter with a legal slant (linked is an early article).

Thanks for that link - I remember reading the Oatmeal's hilarious response to the original threatening letter, but never paid attention to the story after that. It takes a real jerk to post someone else's work without attribution, then threaten to sue for defamation when they call you out for it.

Yes, those are generally safe sources. You just have to look carefully at each image, because the rights for use will be listed with it - some require attribution and/or a link. But both of those places are pretty safe for finding images. :)
