I hope you know I am saving this link. :Hail:

Thank you so much for doing this, Jenna.
You're the best, Jenna. My proposal got no agents, but I'm thinking that's likely to be because of the limited size of my market. I'm thinking 5-digit copies sold: exactly where in that range is up for grabs. I'm afraid it's not enough earning potential to interest an agent.

My next proposal is going direct to publishers, but I'll wait to see a bit more of what you have to say.

Okay.
This thread hasn't been used in a while, I wonder how long until I get a reply.

First off, thanks.
Second off, Its hard not to type, "My book is about blah blah blah and what I do need to do?"

So....that being said....

My book is non-fiction and it is about faith.

Main question:
I've been reading up on proper ways and suggested ways to write a query. In this thread, I don't recall seeing the word "query", I've seen the word proposal.

So....the main difference is between a query and a proposal? Are they different?
What do I need to include or be careful not to include...

How does one "sell" a non-fiction book to an agent and/or publisher?

If you are curious as to my book and the topic, here's a quick section of it.

Here's a quick section:

The following is a chronicle, a travelogue of learning and self discovery, of my trying to understand what do those who believe “get” and I don’t? Or, what I do get that those who believe don’t get? And, what is faith? Is it simply the dictionary definition of, “belief in something without any proof of that something”, or is it something more?

This book, to me, is broken into three sections.

First section: I compare this section of the book to an overture of a musical. Themes and ideas are just touched on and introduced here. My explanation of why I don’t believe, my intentions with this book and my quest are detailed in the first piece. You’re just about to begin the first section.

Second section: The research I conducted to help me be better prepared for the interviews, to learn about the faith I was told to have and to learn about the roots of Christianity and the Bible.

Third section: Here is the main content of the book. As stated, this began as a conversation with the wife. Then I thought, “Why just limit it to her?” In this section are eleven transcribed interviews with people I know that are devout believers, doubters like myself, family members, friends, acquaintances anybody who I thought would help me understand; and a Jewish relative of mine. I want to know how do they reconcile what is in the Bible which could be qualified as ‘absurd’ and what clicks with them which doesn’t click with me which enables them to have faith in God and the Bible.

A proposal is a completely different animal to a query. It can run to several pages; it is divided into several sections which describes the content of your NF book. It includes chapter outlines and sample chapters.
You can find a sample proposal here.
