I won a query submission from Vickie Motter back in February, sent it on the 26th... sent a follow-up note (with re-submission, per her blog) eight weeks later (this Monday)...
At what point to you put down the silence as a "no"?

I think she does reject, eventually, but at this point, you can probably infer what her response will be. That said, did the query submission you won include a promise of feedback or a quick turnaround? If that's the case, perhaps you're getting caught in her spam filter... Good luck with this and other queries (and all your requests)!

Lblankenship, you submitted a full manuscript, right? If so, two months is certainly not an automatic "no." I usually wait a good three months before even nudging.
If you think there is a possibility your manuscript got caught in the spam filter, go ahead and ask via email. It won't hurt. Given all this stuff about minimum cuts though, I would tread carefully. In my opinion, that kind of arrangement gives agents less incentive to push for the big six or to hold a manuscript until the market is ready. No matter how little you get, they still get a sizable chunk. |

I think she's just been busy lately. I've been waiting on news from her for a month and a half now.
Did you format your manuscript for her e-reader? She has an article on her blog about how she likes manuscripts formatted, it goes beyond the usual 1" margins and such.

Thanks for the responses.
No, it wasn't a full MS, and I foolishly formatted it according to her agency's guidelines not her blog's. The contest gave me a specific subject line to use, but I guess it may have gotten caught in the spam filter. After reading most of the thread here, I'm not exactly on the edge of my seat. Hiring an editor and self-pubbing is looking more and more viable...

Rejection for the partial on 7/26. At least she's fast.

I had Margaret Bail ask for my full manuscript. I'm looking at Query tracker for the submissions times, but it says that's for partials. Submitting the whole manuscript isn't a partial, right? Sorry for the stupid question, I'm really new to agents.

No worries. No, a full is not a partial. So, yes, send the full, as requested. No, don't expect the response time to be as fast as for a partial. It might be, but don't expect it. Good luck!

From this thread, it seems like this agency is legit, but I found it unusual that on the website's home page, the first thing they are advertising is that they offer a "full suite of literary services" including Literary Management but also:
Book Development Internet Marketing for Authors Classes for Writers The First Fifty - new service! Isn't this the conflict of interest that I've read about? Like, it's in their financial interest to tell you that your MS needs some work, because they offer that service for a fee? It seems that most of the other agency websites I've seen say, We are agents. Period. |

Thank God for AW. I saw the "First Fifty" thing and it sounded all kinds of fishy. "Shoemaker, stick to thy last!" comes to mind here. Be a book doctor or represent authors. Trying to be too much to too many only looks like a grab for money. I used to do copyedits/proofreading (not content or structure, just grammar, spelling, formatting, etc.) on a contract basis, and I stopped taking fiction jobs because I didn't feel right taking more money for editing than the author was likely to make writing. As I said, this just gives me all sorts of bad feelings.
And a minimum commission? That's like me charging the casino to offset my potential losses. This agency will go on my "Do Not Query" list. Too many other agents don't raise these concerns.
