Bos & Ted, you know, don't you, that in Larry Niven's Known Space universe, violations of the law, such as tax evasion, get citizens sentenced to the organ banks? Essentially, the demand for transplantable organs is such that the sentence for any crime is death - by being carved up and your organs harvested by the nearest handy autodoc.

I confess I've never read Niven, though I have always meant to do so. One of those writers who is on my "to be read... someday" list.
Bos, you should. Ringworld is probably one to start with, or maybe Protector. The Man-Kzin Wars anthologies are also pretty good and really base you in the culture of Known Space.
Ringworld is the reason I want to read him.
