More info: The magazine is South Florida History it's a non-profit magazine and while there is no monetary payment they do give the writer 10 copies of the magazine.

It has a circulation of 3,800 magazines many going to libraries and historical societies in South Florida.

So my question since I am trying to break into history writing would this be a good starting off point for me. While I don't have any clips they don't ask for any and I do have a blog about Florida history and a bachelor's in history so I'm not totally clueless about writing. I'm thinking this is a good start despite no monetary gain because of who is running the magazine.

Here is a link: South Florida History Magazine

Thanks!

As a starting point, a reputable non-profit which doesn't pay but gives you a credit or clips which are nothing to be ashamed of seems just fine.

I actually started out writing for a non-profit back in 2004. It gave me some much-needed confidence and a few clips. I say do a stellar job on the article, get your clip and milk it for all it's worth by using it to land paying assignments. I never advise to make writing for free a habit, but in your case it sounds like a good opportunity to get a needed clip. Good luck!
