I've just signed with an agent and the first thing she wants is for me to have a website. I've looked all over, at a million different sites and came to The Author's Guild where they'll basically build a free website for you and host it. Does anyone have any experience with this or should I look elsewhere? Any other suggestions would be welcomed.

It's always wise to do a bit of research before making a thread.

So, what option are you looking into now? How much will it set you back?

Actually, it depends a lot on what you want.

The domain name (.com) and the hosting are not really expensive anymore. You can have both for less than 100$ a year.

Now, the website in itself is highly dependent on what you're aiming for. A custom coded website full of bells and whistles can cost you 5 grands easy. If you want something on the cheaper side, you can install (or hire / coerce / seduce someone to do it for you) WordPress. WordPress is free and there are tons of free templates. There are some paid templates too, anywhere from 20 to 250$.

While WordPress is not the only free solution out there, it's the one I prefer (and recommend) for it's versatility. Of course, the downside is that you have to pay for your own hosting.

Hope that helps.

Yes, thanks for all this. I ended up going to a company that does low to mid cost websites from templates. I looked at doing it myself but there's a reason I'm a writer and not a web developer.
Altogether it'll be around $NZ1900 plus hosting.
