Just an observation: You have to be really careful with the word "outlier." Just because someone is in the top percentile doesn't mean they're necessarily an outlier if there's linear growth.

On the other hand, the whole top 5-10% could be considered "outliers" depending on the distribution and growth of the previous 90%. It's not possible to say without having all of the data.

Hi again. Sorry for sort of abandoning this thread for a while. In reply to how many rejections I have, well, way too many of them. I've had four fulls (got my last rejection on one today) and a couple of 'we liked this and thought the main character was great but it wasn't right for us' replies.
So, I guess the question is, who determines if a book's good or not? Surely it's the readers, not the agents, in which case self publishing is an option.

Although I haven't come to any decisions yet, I am still seriously considering self publishing. Thank you for all of the input everyone :)

Annmarie, I self-published a few years ago after what I would say was over 100 rejections (i.e. a mix of rejection letters and mostly agents completely ignoring me with no response whatsoever.)

Yet, for the past two years, I have made an average of $4000 a month on my self-published book because 1) I had a strong web vehicle to advertise it, and 2) I knew I had good material in my book with lots of interested people who would order it.

So if you have both of the above, you can succeed. I did. And still am.

wow, $4000 a month? That's incredible! I guess the publishers and agents don't always get it right after all.
I just self-published my first book on the kindle store and smashwords. Although I'm sure it'll take a lot of self promotion, hopefully I can also sell a few copies :)

So has anyone on here had/is having a successful story from kindle publishing.

And where are some good places to self-publish at?
