Welcome here Gavin. A newbie here too. What is your novel/book all about?

Hi :)!

Okay i'll try and explain, but something I have noticed is that either it's just my descriptions, or everybody has the same problem, but when I try to explain my book, as i'm saying it it doesn't sound very good!

Protagonist is a boy named Drake, from a family of immortals, although he's always known he isn't of the same breed as they are. His brother and best friend Morian is kidnapped by Wraiths, who are demon like creatures that feed on the souls of the dead that get sent to The Void (Kind of similar to the general description of Hell).

So the general theme of the book is Drake, along with his family in parts trying to save Morian before he is killed by the Wraiths. Along the way he discovers what he actually is, and learns that he can manipulate the elements, namely air & water.

He gets sent to a city occupied by a race (whose name I haven't decided on yet, so as a filler, their Knomanthians) who share similar powers over the elements, only they control the earth and fire instead. They basically sabotage every attempt by Drake to learn from them, and force him into agreeing a fight against one of their own, no contact, only using their elements.

The family meanwhile are on the hunt for Mortis. He is basically, Death personified, and is the main "villain" in the first book. He is omnipresent, but does take humanoid form when he needs to. So the family need to catch him, so they can force him to take them into the Void to bring Morian back, as they know no other way to get there.

They manage to get to Mortis and win the ensuing fight, with a little help from two friends, and get Mortis to take them to the Void.

While this is happening Drake is finally being taught to control himself by a group of Knomanthians know as the Lessers. Thanks to their teachings he destroys his opponent in the fight, causing uproar and has to flee the city.

He then joins his family, who have by this point freed Morian. Their celebrations are cut short when they learn that one of Five has been released.

(Sorry I should have mentioned "The Five" further up. They are actually talked about an awful lot in the book, and they are the reason Drake was created, but that's too long to explain here! They are going to be the main "bad guys" of the books. They are basically five Wraiths, but were given super human abilities by the other Wraiths. The drawback is they used so much of their strength that the whole structure of the void was weakened, and, "The Gate", through which the Wraiths move between the void and Drakes world (Utharia) is about to collapse. If this happens, the Wraiths supply of dead runs out and they die, the only ones strong enough to hold open the Gate are the Five!)

So that pretty much ends the first book, i'm not sure whether to end it with a fight against one of the Wraiths or just leave it until the second book..

As I said, I'm reasonably terrible at describing the general story without ending up with pages and pages of writing, so sorry if this is too long, and makes it sound terrible!

In full the whole thing is coming along pretty well, at least, I hope it is...

isn't it amazing how the word count builds up? A word of advice from someone unsuited to such... keep it below 100k if you look for an agent.

I am really happy i'm now a good way in, but in all honesty, we seem to have opposite problems! I'm now desperate to get to the end so I can start editing, as I refuse to edit as I go or i'll never finish! I'm hoping for about 80,000 words, it's aimed at young adult, and I think that's about the norm' :)
