So guys, you know how it's always said that the first novel you write is a learning tool. How many of you have ever revisited it once you've got a book published, and then ended up selling it?

As I wait for my second manuscript to be judged by the editors, I don't know whether to continue on a new project or return to the first and give it a shot at being published. I don't have any extensive rewrites in mind as I'm more or less satisfied with the story. I'd just need to tighten the writing, and strengthen the voice.

So I guess as a source of inspiration, I'm asking for success stories for first novels, and as a source of warning, I could do with a few stories of how going back to a first novel never panned out. And of course if your first novel was the first book you got published, then share that as well.

Well I'm not there yet, but my second is being well received by agents so far. I fully intend to revisit my first. I think in many ways it's a better novel, it's just I wasn't enough writer at the time to do it justice.

My first novel, written in high school, got lost somewhere along the way. I may go back to my second and third sometime, but my newer ideas are more enticing at the moment.

If your first still excites you, by all means go back and see what you can make of it. I always consider the trunk more a rest-stop than a grave. ;)
