Def Leppard aren't yours either. They come from Sheffield.

I don't want Def Leppard so that's okay with me. :)

What is this thread about anymore? Auto tune? Which generation is better? Or just a witch hunt for the crappy artists of today?

It's kind of impossible to argue. Today we have auto tune readily available, and recording equipment/software that used to be too expensive to just play around with. A kid can hop on YouTube and broadcast themselves to anyone who will listen. If I wanted to record a track, all I need is for one of the devices I already have to have a built-in microphone. And being god-awful is far more viral right now than being genuinely good.

Case in point-Rebecca Black.:rolleyes

Did you see the difference though between Maria and Willow?

In my head.
Do YOU get the difference between a song solely meant for dancing and one meant to be a ballad? There's this thing called genres.

Is it really Justin Bieber's fault that he was become what he has, though? If I was him, it would be really hard to maintain any form of artistic integrity - ever.

Anyway, I'll stick with my music and you can all argue about which person on the radio is worst.:tongue

My point is that the state of music today is deplorable. It's all disposable acts and quick money. In country music, George Strait would not have been given a second glance today because he's too "traditional".

We now have a situation where half the songs they play on country music stations are now heard on pop stations. The 90's was the last true Country music decade, where there was a clear delineation.

Heavy metal and for the most part, rock and roll, is dead.

In my example, Maria is far more talented, can actually sing, and is a much better songwriter. She DESERVED her contract. Her management is competent. Willow on the other hand, was autotuned, her image was basically created, and that audio abortion called Whip My Hair was given to her. There's basically an entire solar system between the two in terms of ability and talent.

Willow would not have been allowed anywhere near a studio in the 90's, while Maria might have had a shot. Today, the reverse is true.

Look, you'll find good music and terrible music at *any* point in history. The terrible music tends not to endure, and is thus forgotten, unless it is enduringly *bad*, or unless we become sentimental about it.

Therefore, if all we remember is the good music and lovable kitsch, today's music will *always* suffer by comparison.

And furthermore, it's specious to compare artists with entertainers with money spinners. They all make music, but with different priorities. (And if people get pleasure out of listening to Justin Bieber, who's to say that's wrong? If you don't like it, don't listen.)

This is a tail-chasing discussion topic. And it really doesn't sound like much of a discussion, but more of a rant.

*shrug* Carry on, but RYFW.

Woops, I'm DEFINITELY too late - looks like she took her ball and went home. All I can say to that is -

GOOD RIDDANCE!
What is the point you're trying to make, exactly?
There is no point, there is only a blunt instrument.

I don't enjoy Stephenie Meyer's writing. And I think she pretty much used 90% of Octavia Butler's Lilith's Brood to "write" The Host. But I won't wish the woman dead. In the end she doesn't care who hates her. She's too busy enjoying her millions.

And the lady has got a shitload of millions. And so does Bieber.

What do you have?

Remember King's comment about Meyer's writing? lol.

About bieber, the problem isn't with him as much as it's with his major label. Major labels are very restrictive on what their artists can do. Hell, some of them can't even write their own songs, all they are allowed to do is sing.

I'm working on a potential career in this (recording artist) and I will never use a major label. I will only use independent ones.

There are pros to major labels though. The biggest one I can think of is if you can stay on the label, you are guaranteed success. Not necessarily with money but fans.

A pro with indie labels is the amount of freedom you have.

Are you familiar with Muse? Virtuosity and huge world popularity. Music is not in a deplorable condition, it's just as it always was...

You've always had Justin Biebers (Donny Osmund) and Muses (Pink Floyd). disposable mass appeal pop will not die. Nor will musically talented rockers...

I've never even heard Bieber sing, so I won't comment about that [I do admit to being a signed up fan of acts like The Backstreet Boys and Westlife etc]

What I will say, is what concerns me is the way they are promoted and styled. The poor kid is the epitome of Disneyfication, and that is going to fuck with anyone's head.

Although, my sister showed me the perfume ad. That was just wrong.

probably watching DARK KNIGHT
Def Leppard- 60 million album sales, still recording

Justin Bieber- 4 million and forgotten in two years maybe less.

The fact that Def Leppard are "still recording" hardly proves that they aren't has-beens, in fact, has-beens who never were anything more than a guilty pleasure to many.

You like and respect them. I don't. Big deal.

Anyone who says, "music was so much better in my day," isn't really following music very closely. Really. I don't like Justin Beiber, but I barely even notice him. I am too busy paying attention to music I enjoy.

Who knows where Beiber is going to be next year. The industry has changed so much since I bought my first 45 in 1971...hell, it's totally different than when I bought Blondie's reunion CD No Exit in 1999.
