Do short stories have to have a twist at the end? Or am I generalizing too much. I should point out that I'm referring to short stories for children
Most of the short stories I've read in the big children's print magazines (
Highlights,
Cricket,
Spider,
Ladybug,
Pockets,
Odyssey, etc.) don't have twist endings. Some do, certainly, but not most. In my experience.
It really comes down to the individual magazine's preferences, though. Children's magazines vary widely in what they like to see (for example,
Cricket is more "edgy" than
Highlights, and
Odyssey mostly prints sci-fi and fantasy).
