I'd say this is true of everyone on this board, whether they know it or not. The fact we have computers, internet access, a general level of literacy, and sufficient spare time tells us that we're waaay ahead. :)

This life is pretty great from where I'm standing, and I have yet to make a penny off my writing. :)

Way to go! I've definitely had that feeling of wanting to take back that email.

Also, James is right. Try to have multiple stories out on submission. It reinforces that your whole writing life isn't riding on one story.

Congratulations!

It was the most nerve-wrecking thing I ever did, the first time I did it. I had the e-mail ready to go all day and I refused to click send ;)

Hope you're proud of yourself, you should be! :D

A few days ago, I paid 20 dollars to enter a short story competition but I still haven't sent my story. The deadline is fast approaching and I'm so nervous, I'm not sure I'm going to make it.

Congratulations on the first submission! That was how I ended up on AW - chewing my nails off as I'd submitted something. I hope you win.

Go ahead and send it mar quest. The worst that can happen is they say no. That isn't so bad, really. Then you've got the first one out of the way and you can send it to the next one.

I just remind myself that the writing part is really fun and keeps me sane by giving me something to think about at work - other than work :)

A hint, once you've sent it, don't look at it again. For any reason. Don't ask yourself if you really "silly little mistake" and open it to find out. It doesn't matter. Once it's gone, it's done unless it comes back (then you can fix silly little mistake) :)

Hi Sagana, Coling and Kate,

Thanks so much for all your kind words. I finally sent the thing! I'm really glad I did it!

Awesome mar quest! I am still waiting to hear about the competition. They emailed recently to say they were still going over submissions and will let us know soon. My nerves have subsided now though, and I have continued writing and stopped stressing about that one. I have stopped looking the story over too :) Until I hear back, good or bad, I refuse to look at it anymore.
Let us know how it goes! Good luck!

Nice one!

I just submitted a flash piece. It was my first ever submission, I feel like I've been giving a surge of energy and now I've finished a short, writing two more.
