First, let me say that so far I utterly LOATHE Microsoft Office 2011.

Now that that's off my chest, I have an issue I'm hoping someone can help me figure out. I installed the new Office suite on my mom's computer today, and had no clue until the install was finished that it would uninstall Outlook from her computer. This is a dirty trick, I feel, since it doesn't clearly tell you when you go to install that it's going to remove Outlook and you're going to be sh*t out of luck.

So. She's going to have to switch to Windows Live Mail or pay for Outlook, which she's not willing to do. Unfortunately, Windows Live will not import the Outlook email file, so all her stored messages are gone. Is there any way to convert that .pst file so WL will recognize it? I've just spent the better part of two hours trying to figure it out and search for the answer online, and I'm at the end of my patience.

Stupid, stupid Microsoft Office. :(

I thought Office only wiped out your old Outlook if it was installing a newer version. I installed the beta version of 2010 but left all my Office2007 intact -- did not install Outlook2010 -- so I still have the old Outlook. (Which I only have so I can answer the odd question about Outlook.)

So this new version of Office is one that doesn't include Outlook? I'd have thought there would still be an option to keep the old, but it might have been overlooked? Hmm...upgrade? Maybe not. (I'm rambling, yes.) An upgrade could be making assumptions not in accord with your own.

There is a possible workaround, if you have the install disk for the older version. Uninstall the new one, re-install the old, and try to import the pst and export all messages. Then upgrade and whistle a happy tune.

You probably chose to "Upgrade" from 2007 to 2010 -- in which case the installation effectively overwrites 2007. If you want to have both installed, you'd need to choose a custom installation and choose a different path for your install of 2010.

As Matera suggested, you should be able to re-install the older version of Outlook. If you do, I would suggest doing a custom installation and choosing a different path for the install. This should leave both 2007 and 2010 intact. You may have some weirdness with the file mappings though. If you install 2007 after 2010, all of the office file types may be mapped to 2007 instead of just the Outlook file types, in which case you may be able to repair 2010 to fix that? I'm guessing there :).
