Does one have to write a query/synopsis again for a 2nd book in a series?

I've always wondered, say if an agent sells your first book to a publisher as a series (or with a clause stating something like any subsequent books written related to the first one should be first offered to us).

When you write the second and third book, do you have write another query/synopsis again, or would your agent/editor just read it head on?

I wrote a really loose two page outline for my second book, sent it to my agent with "Does this suck?" as the subject. He said "Nope" and away I went.

I've thrown around a few ideas on the second book with my editors (mainly because they are influenced by events in the first book) but again, it's very loose.

However, mileage does vary on this topic. I know a few authors who've had to submit detailed outlines for Books 2&3 even before Book 1 was bought, so the publishers have a rough idea if the series is headed into "jump the shark" territory.

You certainly shouldn't need to query again, however.

You do if asked for one, you don't if not asked for one. Though having a synopsis is always a good idea.
