Is that great lawyer one who specialises in publishing contracts? If not, then how the bloody hell can you expect to rely on his opinion?

Yes, I don't get this either. I know jack-all about the law, but I'm aware that different lawyers have different specialities, and if one who practises criminal law isn't the most qualified to handle divorce proceedings, maybe he/she isn't going to do that well with a publishing contract either.

There was a coupon to use on Amazon? That someone other than the author could actually use? Good grief.

I've seen quite a few PA authors publish the coupons for readers to buy the books at the discounts instead of full price. Granted those were during the 'buy your book at x% off' times, not Amazon, and I'm not even sure if anyone had readers who were successful at ordering. But authors have advertised the coupons during past sales, I guess hoping it would encourage more buyers.

Another unhappy author:

My novel "[redacted]" Based on a true story, got off to a slow start but has sold out in all the bookstores and internet vendors. My book has done so well that PublishAmerica raised the price from $27.95 to $32.95. What do I have to show for all my hard work, a check for $6.71. This is the biggest slap to the face PublishAmerica has ever delivered. I don't even want to write the next book anymore.

But that's more than many received. He's answered by one of the latest cheerleaders who just received her author copy and is awaiting an order.

I can understand your frustration. My book is on amazon and borders.com and they say out of stock or not available, as well. I don't know why that is.

I wouldn't let it affect your desire to write, though. Never stop writing when it's your passion. I sent my second book in to PA and will send in my 3rd, plus my autobiography.

I am at a point where I don't care if it doesn't sell. At least it's published, but I don't stop writing and I never stop seeking an agent. I want to be on the shelves of B&N and the others but if I stop writing, it will never happen.

Keep your chin up and continue to fight to achieve your dream.

I hope your second book is a huge success.

If it becomes a huge success, it'll be the first PA book to do so.

More on royalties

Unfortunately that author didn't provide an email address or website, and a honeymooner/loyalist chimed in.

I can understand your frustration. My book is on amazon and borders.com and they say out of stock or not available, as well. I don't know why that is.
At least one person has contacted this author to let her know about PA. If anyone has had such a warning but disregards it and doesn't investigate further, I'm afraid I don't feel sympathetic when they say they don't understand why problems keep occurring.

Well, if you don't care about your book selling, PA is the perfect outfit. They will ensure that no one can purchase it!

As for seeking an agent, not mentioning the PA books would be a good idea.

I want to be on the shelves of B&N and the others but if I stop writing, it will never happen.
And if you stick with PA, it will never happen.

This also contradicts the "I don't care if it doesn't sell" part. Oh well, the author knows the deal and continues to sign up for it.

The royalty-cheque wake-up call:
My novel "<redacted>" Based on a true story, got off to a slow start but has sold out in all the bookstores and internet vendors. What's really sad is that this kind of crap makes authors stop writing.

A fellow PA author encourages him to keep writing, and she also says:
I am at a point where I don't care if it doesn't sell. At least it's published, but I don't stop writing and I never stop seeking an agent. I want to be on the shelves of B&N and the others but if I stop writing, it will never happen.
Good on her for wanting her book to be IN bookstores, not just available THROUGH them, and for seeking agent representation.

Hopefully all of them will find their way to AW, where they can get the help, encouragement, and industry info they need.

adding: A "cheerleader" replies, sounding less pro-PA than she used to:
The price of everyones books have been increased and it has nothing to do with popularity. The Sold Out or Out of Stock notice at online vendors has to do with who prints them up. A while ago PA send us a notice that if ee bought x amount of out own books they would allow Amazon.com to start printing our books. If we didn't fall hook line and sinker for that ploy PAs printer would continue to print our books and that takes time. The only reason our books say Out of Stock is because it takes longer when PA does it then it would for Amazon who have their own printer or distributor. I hope this clarifies things for you.

I reckon that last one will get cornfielded: PA doesn't like references to ploys on their part.

I think some authors are learning to choose carefully the subject headers of their new threads. This one is entitled "Post subject: <redacted book title> - my first book" but the opening post reads:
Hello fellow authors, This is my first experiance with publishing companies and I find myself in constant frustration, I know I should be happy and greatful for this company publishing my first book, but some how I find the Author Support team kind of too relaxed when it comes to responding/communication to e-mails with questions and concerns, I send them an e-mail, follow it up with 3/4 reminders, then I get a reply back which usualy does not completally answer my question, so I start the process over again, each contact takes a week or so, is that a common practice?

Poor author. No, it's not a common practice.

I don't think Infocenter will be happy about this reply to the royalties thread.

Bolding mine. And this is an author who was a staunch loyalist on the PA Facebook community.

Go to Amazon and sign up with them. If you have purchase your book from PA sign a few of your books and ship them to Amazon. You will have your book ready to ship out right away because now it is in stock. It only cost you shipping and they store them in their warehouse for free until they sell. When you are ready to ship your book go to the online USPS and print your shipping labels. If you do not want to ship your book to them you still can list your book on Amazon and ship from your home or business.

This PA author is suggesting that other authors buy copies of their book (including the outrageous shipping and handling fee) and then turn around and send those copies to Amazon (once again paying shipping fees, albeit less than PA charges) so their book will be in stock and available. Something their publisher should be doing for them, as stated in their contract!

Not to mention the fact that once a PA author has paid for their book, shipping and handling fees, and additional shipping fees to send the books to Amazon, they will have made absolutely no profit from the endeavor. Now the book is in stock, but still no one knows about the book or the author except the author's family and friends who can just as easily purchase the book from PA directly (or the author directly for that matter). ** sigh ** It's an effort in frustration.

It's so sad to watch PA authors try to find a way around their publisher's total indifference to their efforts to sell to the public. :(

ETA: "Indifference" might be kind--it's more like active, malevolent interference.

Two posts disappeared from the royalties thread - the one which mentioned PA's "ploy" and the one by the author who was really disappointed in his $6-plus-change check. The thread by the newbie asking if it was "common practice" for Author Support not to respond also seems to be gone.

Busy night for the censor.

From FaceBook.

Is this new or the same old misleading crap?

My publisher, PublishAmerica has announced Ingram Books, the largest wholesale book company in the world is to begin selling PublishAmerica books. More outlets for (title redacted)!
Funny how a publisher claiming to be so huge and successful over a ten year stretch would make a big deal out of being carried by a distributor. None of my publishers bother to mention it.

Prolly too busy selling books to the public rather than to their own writers.

An author whose book was recently released says:
One of my customers got a notice yesterday saying my book was on back order and it would take another week for her to receive it. How can it be on back order all ready?
Normally, POD doesn't equal one week backorder, but in the case of PA, I reckon it's the best you can hope for.

An author posts he/she is still waiting, as of Sept 11, for a book order from July 7. That's over 2 months!!!! It takes less time to install a custom kitchen!
And I'm sure that person has been charged already for the books. Therefore, PA is using their money before the receipt of goods.

If only a few of those authors would notify their credit card companies. They'd be doing themselves and other authors stuck with PA a huge favor.

Dave is correct. Many of the slimy things PA does are technically legal, but not delivering goods you've been paid for is not.

If only those people would make a fuss with the credit card companies...but I'm sure they are thinking they want to be "nice" to the author and not cause problems.

If there are enough complaints about a particular merchant, the merchant can incur a fine for each complaint and eventually lose their vendor status.

Just sayin'.
