I also emailed the Mirror this morning, and let them know exactly what what kind of press Strategic is, and who runs the operations.

I got a reply back pretty quickly from an "Andrew Penman" at the Daily Mirror saying that they were going to start looking into the situation and thanking me for writing.

I hope they'll do exactly that.

While the Mirror need their asses kicked for not checking this story properly, Andrew Penman has exposed several notorious vanity presses and provided a voice to the authors who became victims in the UK throughout the 1990's. So whatever about the journalist and editors who dealt with the story late last week, the right person is certainly on the job now.

I don't fault the conventional news outlets so much, since they don't necessarily have any knowledge of publishing. Where I have a major problem is the publishing-related venues--PW, GalleyCat, even the Bookseller, which picked it up as a news link in its daily newsletter--that picked up a story that was improbable on its face without bothering to do any digging.

GalleyCat is the only one so far that has bothered to do an update.

Yeah, little Leo's supposed book was released over a year ago, in July 2009. I'm thinking that this was all an attempted publicity grab by the mother, who is the actual author. Pretty skeezy, IMO.

I think you're right, Victoria. She posted in Making Light on January 4, 2009 (post#14) with additional responses in 2010 (posts #30 and #32), so she is aware of Bobbie's business practices.

Can anything be done about Strategic having a Facebook page touting their marketing? I'd write in and comment on there, but I don't think I know enough about the industry to make an effective argument with them. Have people commented on their (Strategic's) pages before on FB?

supernegm: ignore both. Neither one will do anything but take your story and your money.

Start at the bookstore. See who's putting books like yours on the shelves there. Look up publishers online, and cross check them with the Bewares board and P&E. Plug in "+ scam" beside a publisher's or agent's name to see what (if anything) comes up. And run far away from anyone who asks you to pay upfront (unless you're going with a self-pub).

What's been said. SBG is a waste of time and money. Walk away.

Black Rose is also a waste of time and money. The one running it has no pro experience in the publishing industry. I'd put him down as well-meaning, but clueless, and in the end you are expected to buy copies of your own work. Walk away.

Here is the one of the latest junk emails encouraging me to pay to sell my book overseas. I posted another on another thread earlier. Sorry for the long post. I noticed that he still hasn't corrected the ending sentence.

Re: Frankfurt Book Show Invitation: Oct. 6-10th, 2010.

This email explains how and why you should send your book with us to the Frankfurt Book show to sell the rights there. The signup form is at the very bottom of the email. Also note our new "thank you" program. If you attend or send your book to 3 shows, the 4th show is free for your Book-in-Booth. See below.

Note from CEO:
--------------------------
GOING GLOBAL MIGHT BE THE MOST EXCITING BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY THAT YOU AS A WRITER WILL SEE IN YOUR LIFETIME. We are going global with our published and unpublished authors. As writers, publishers, and participants in the publishing industry we are going to be witness to the largest and fastest ramp-up that the world has ever seen as China has decided that the book and publishing industry is "strategic" and a couple of billion people are going to learn how to read and/or expand their knowledge of English literature. We believe that the opening of the Chinese publishing business will be bigger than the current global publishing business which stands at about $40 Billion worldwide. That's another $40 BILLION. Furthermore with the book shows in Frankfurt, London, and even the Arabic countries gaining in prominence, we are committed to expanding opportunities for our clients around the world. We are also close to closing a deal to attend all the US library and specialty industry shows and we will notify you of that in the next few weeks.

(In case you were wondering how our upcoming Beijing show is going, we are already in selling converstations by email with a number of their publishers including Shanghai Fine Arts, Petroleum Industry Press, Tongji University Press, National Defense Industry Press, and the Jilin Photography Publishing Press. We emailed them because they are exhibitors too, and we have meetings already set at the show. They LOVE the depth of authors we represent).

How Does Selling "Rights" Work?
----------------------------------------------------
Basically, at these book shows we are selling the "rights" to publish it in the language of choice or the geography of choice. For example, if we sold the German or Chinese language rights, they pay for the privilege to publish it in Germany, or China or other Asian countries. This does NOT affect the "rights" to publish in English, or in the US or UK.. etc. As a matter of fact, if we sell the rights to publish in another country and in another language, then that will only enhance the sales value for the US because they will have validated the quality and marketability of your work.

Testimonials:
We are now in our 3rd year of attending the book shows in Frankfurt, London, NY, and China. Here are some great reasons you should send your work, or attend the show.
------------------------

Letters from BEA Expo Participants in NY:

If you are an author thinking about attending one of these trade shows, I would love to share my experiences with you. Before I signed up, my main concerns and worries were…. would I know what to say to industry professionals, how would I pitch my book, would I be able to speak at all? Strategic Book was a phenomenal online presence and I appreciated being able to display my book, but I had no idea how much help they would provide me.
Every member, smiling, friendly, productive, and the materials they prepared for me from bookmarks and pamphlet to my own stand with my books graphics and promotional materials from the net. A famous media publicist who quickly taught me to be enthusiastic, show the customer I care, and I do, and gave me assurance on my personal pitch through his enthusiastic response to it. It was incredible; we met as the next round of authors.
Then, we were set loose… and we saw our tables and setup, and I was immediately enthusiastic due to how professional and beautiful the arrangement. I was ready, and people approached me and I approached people, but I made mistakes early… like trying to see what their title was on their cards… these are people and I quickly adjusted to friendly eye contact, wide smile, and soon enough I was hawking free books left and right.
I was told my book will be featured in SCI-FI magazine, 200,000 niche circulation, and I’m hoping this will generate sales and move Barnes and Noble to accept my book into stores. It’s a process, and without Strategic Book Group’s help, selection of booth which I was impressed with, setup and go, everything, it wouldn’t have happened.
For fifteen minutes the head of Mediacrat spoke with me, many people told me stories and asked me questions, and once in a while someone may not have liked a response, such as my insistence to ask for amazon reviews but I always adjusted on the scene and I decided due to their targeted selection to submit for a review from BlueInk Reviews.
I must admit being there was like being on stage, and all the authors in Strategic’s Booth were all-stars which reveals to one about the management. I met Susan B. Katz for crying out loud, and comedian Sal Richards. That was hardly it. Marc Paulhus words echoed, and his twice around strategy was sound—that is take reconnaissance then introduce… I didn’t get to that point but perhaps next year I’ll be even more prepared.
I also should have focused more on names, but there were so many people and if you affected even some your prospects are likely to rise. I know there were reviewers that may write up for my book and I gave my best impression I could to everyone… wore it on my sleeve. I’m not in the best shape in my life but I didn’t let that bother me either, because in the end it’s the content of the book, the product that will virtually under the right conditions, those created by Strategic Book Group sell itself into the hands of prospective investors.
-Al Carrozza, Author of Universal Enzyme

THINKING ABOUT A BOOK EXPO SHOW? SCARED? DON’T BE. IT’S THE BEST DEAL IN TOWN.
- Alice Dinizo, Author of Imperfect Past.

If you are an author thinking about attending one of these trade shows, I would love to share my experiences with you. Before I signed up, my main concerns and worries were what it would be like to be an author promoting my book. Would the people who passed the Strategic Booth just grab my book and stuff it in their “show and tell” collection? Would they ignore me totally and I’d have to go back to New Jersey with a bag full of “unloved” books.

Book Expo was a wonderful experience, and it was mostly because Nancie, Kait, Robert and the other Strategic staff were first rate coaches. Robert told me immediately what to say should media approach, and made a sign for my kiosk that said it all. Nancie coached me in how to deal with grabbers, the people who just grab your book and run, not asking if it is a fiction or non-fiction work or anything at all about your writing.
Basically, I loved meeting with the many people who stopped at the Strategic Booth and visited with me about my book. Most were book buyers and educators who were delighted to have a copy of Imperfect Past to review for possible future purchases. They were intelligent and pleasant, as well. I gave away all my copies of Imperfect Past to appreciative people and went home to New Jersey with a happy heart and an empty book bag.
There was one memorable moment that I must share. As many different people crowded around me, asking questions about my book, it would have been easy for me to miss an important contact. A group of librarians were asking about using my book for a reading club, and I almost did not see the woman poised at their edge. She was a reporter from a Washington, D.C. paper, and a big time contact. I await her telephone call to me when she’s finished reading Imperfect Past. She promised and I know she’ll be calling.

======================

Send your book to the show, or visit the show with us!

At this time we are asking you if you would like us to take your book to the Frankfurt book show, and if you would like to attend the show as well. (FYI, about 1/4 of our authors are international and by attending all four worldwide shows, we are giving everyone a chance to attend one of the shows).

The information about your participation is below.

You do not have to attend, but if you can attend one of the shows every few years, it will broaden your understanding of the industry.

----------------------------------------
The goal of the book show is to connect buyers and sellers of books, especially international rights sales. So the attendees are packagers, agents, book chains, libraries, retail stores, publishers, marketers and more... in short, everyone who is anyone in the book business will attend.
Strategic is finalizing our booth purchase now and we are gathering those authors that would like to be with us at the show, either personally, or with their book. Please see the information below. As you read the information, please understand the following. We will be presenting ALL of our published authors to buyers throughout the show. However, due to physical and size constraints, we can only show so many physical books in our booth. Also, this show is expensive, so we are asking our authors to help with some of the overhead associated with the show.
Many of you may wonder why there is a charge for these services. The short answer is that it is expensive to participate and each Book Expo has figured out how to wring out every dollar they can from the exhibitors. They charge for everything! And unfortunately, they are the only game in town, so they can get away with it.. sigh. Birds of a feather....

How You Can Participate with us at the Book Fair
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First, let me describe how this works so that you can get a feel for which service might be best for you. Buyers from other countries circulate around the show. The first thing they notice is our author in the booth and the author's signage. This may prompt a discussion. Next, they look at the books and titles we have on physical display. This may prompt a discussion. If we get into a discussion with a buyer, we always say, "what else would you be looking for?" and we take them to our online, searchable catalog via a laptop. (That's how we found a rep. for 20 of our books into China).
So, to be clear, all our authors will be at the show in the database/catalog but the ones that get the most chance at success are the authors in the booth, and the authors with their books on display get the next most interest.
=================================
Services:
1. Display Your Book at the Strategic Booth ($299). We place your book or sell-sheet outward facing in the booth so that it will grab interest. There is limited physical space in the booth so there are a limited number of spots. Reserve now.
2. Your presence at the Strategic Booth ($699) PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS CAN, AND WILL SELL OUT QUICKLY. If you want one of these spots you really must reserve it now. We sold out BEA in NY, and in Frankfurt, and there were a number of authors that missed that opportunity. This is a first come, first serve opportunity.
3. Walk the Show (Free). Please join us and let us "tour" you around the show. You do have to buy your own attendance ticket.
==========================
1. Display Your Book at the Strategic Booth: We will have either a double or triple booth/stand for the show. In our booth we will have numerous bookshelves featuring actual physical copies of the books we have published. The idea is to catch the eye of a buyer so we can show them the book and discuss ordering terms. (Note: the show does NOT sell individual books, the show is for wholesale and large buyers). We can only display a limited number of books, so if you want your book displayed on one of our Strategic shelves, it's first come, first serve. The price is $299 per title and we will take care of all the details.
2. Your presence at the Booth ($699) Many of the larger publishers have their authors at the show. If you are the author, standing in the booth, we will have a poster and other supporting marketing materials set up to capture attention. In other words, you get a front and center location to pitch your book to anyone walking by. You can choose any 'half day' to be in the booth. Once again, this is first come first serve to our authors. Our authors at the NY show easily gave away 30 or more books in a half-day. It really was a very positive experience. If you wish to be an "Author In Booth", please give us 3 alternative dates and times below.
3. (NEW) Walk the show with us. These shows are invaluable for authors. They show the magnitude of the industry and there are always things to be learned and deals to be found. WE STRONGLY ENCOURAGE EVERY AUTHOR TO ATTEND ONE OF THESE SHOWS EVERY YEAR OR TWO. Also, there is no doubt that if you walk the show the odds are good that you will find some way to improve your sales. So, this year we are encouraging as many authors to come to the show as possible. We will have an orientation meeting every morning and we will be available to answer your questions throughout the show. Our goal is to send you out there to bring back deals. If we have 100 authors working the show, that's awesome! We will facilitate that to the best of our ability. Caveat: It is important to realize that you can't 'hang out at the booth' as the booth is very, very busy. But we will have a process to bring in the deals. Also, you buy your own exhibition ticket and take care of your travel.

Who should go?
-----------------------------
All genres can participate. We will build a sales cover sheet for each unpublished book we take to the show.

Your book does NOT have to be published in order to participate.
Also we can take ebooks.
-------------------------------------------------
Why can we take non-published work? Think about it, every book has to be translated and because it has to be translated, it doesn't even have to be edited! gulp! And if the subject matter meets a foreign publishers' needs, they don't care if it has a sales history or not. That means, that for the first time, we can take work in production and present manuscripts that are not published. (The manuscript must be complete though).

We are Experts At Presenting Authors at Trade Shows!
We just got back from the New York Book Expo.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here are pictures from our participation at the NY Book Expo in 2010. http://picasaweb.google.com/lynneddy/20100528?feat=email# We had 8 booths at the show. These pictures show what it is like to be and "author in the booth", or have your book at the booth.
http://www.strategicbookmarketing.com/sbm-BEAexpor-2010.html

Frequently Asked Questions:

----------------------------------------------

Q) What is the deadline?

A) As soon as we fill the spots. Please keep in mind that this might sell out. If you even remotely want to do it, please reserve your manuscript spot with at least $100 and if you don't send it, we'll refund your money. Author-In-Booth must be paid in full.

Q) My book is published, how does it work?

A) After you register you will email us your book and a synopsis and as soon as possible we will create a German/English cover sheet to put on the shelf in front of your book. WE DO NOT NEED A PHYSICAL BOOK. We will build a sales cover sheet in German and English for the booth.

Q) My book is not yet published, how does it work?

A) After you register you will send us an e-version of the book and a short synopsis and we will create a German/English cover sheet to put on the shelf. Even if your book does not have illustrations or is not edited, we can take it and try to sell it there.

Q) How will this affect the selling of my book in the US, UK, Australia, or other countries.

A) Only positively. If you close a deal in a foreign country, then your book will be perceived as that much more valuable, whether published or unpublished.

Q. Should I attend even if I don't choose the Book-In-Booth or Author-In-Booth package?

A. Sure if possible. Come walk the show and meet our team. As an author you should see at least one of these shows every 1-2 years. If you are really committed then you should go every year, take classes, and learn, learn, learn. So yes, please attend and come by the booth. We will have morning meetings on every day to help you know what to do. By walking the show, we know you will find some ways to improve your writing career.

Q. If 'walking the show' can we meet with your team while there?

A. Yes, but it is an action packed time for us, so time is very limited. We will be at the booth though, so you can stop by there. We will have a contact for you to bring deals to.

Q) Will I need a badge or pass?

A) If you are an Author In Booth then we can get you a pass. Other than that you will need to get your own ticket and arrange your own travel.

Q) How much time should I allocate to see the show?

A) It takes us about 2 days to make the rounds of the entire show, and I know what I am looking for so I'm moving quickly. . If you take classes, or it is your first time, it is easily 2 full days. Try to arrive early (when the show opens), as that is the best time to talk to exhibitors.

Q. Tell me again why I would have to pay for the services above?

A. The services above are not for everyone. But, these shows are truly amazing!. I can still remember the 'wow' factor the first time I went. We will be selling and presenting ALL of our clients at the show. The services above are extra and optional. We have some authors that are already spending thousands marketing their work, hiring PR companies, etc. This is one more outlet for them. If you just like writing and don't really care about the business of books, then don't spend the money.

Q. If I spend the money, will I get a decent return on my investment?

A) Have you heard this line from an old grizzled CEO? "I know half of my advertising is completely wasted, I just don't know which half ?! " We think that sums it up. This is marketing, and there are no promises. However, I can guarantee that some of the authors that participate will get a significant boost from their presence at the show. This link is just a partial list of the authors that were 'in play' from Frankfurt in 2009. http://www.strategicbookmarketing.com/frankfurt-2009-leads.htm . We have all kinds of follow-up meetings from this list. (Most of these deals take some time for relationship building it seems).

Q) Can I buy more than one service?

A) Yes, you can have your book-in-booth there, and present there by purchasing both packages.

Q) I'm not active with you. Can I still participate?

A) Yes. We want to be perceived as the largest Rights Agency at the show. The bigger our booth the better we look. More is better.

Q) Are there any discounts?

A) Yes and No... If you really want a big presence, like 10 books or more, please let us know and we will try to work something out. Some of our authors with a series of books, meet this criteria.

Also we are not starting to offer a buy 3 get 1 Free option. If you join us for any 3 shows your 4th show is free (Book-in-Booth only). If this is your situation, please note it on the payment form below. We have a number of authors that have sent their book to every show and we appreciate their support.

Q) Will all the Strategic people stay in the same hotel (group rate)? Will I be completely on my own? Is the "poster and other supporting materials" included in the cost of being "in the booth"? Do I still have a few days to make up my mind?

A) We will assist you with the details if you decide to attend. It really is more convenient if you can get a hotel on the bus route if you are going to be there multiple days. Yes, we will have posters and displays for those authors that will be at the booth (AIB). Yes, you have a few days to make up your mind, but it is first come, first serve, and there are limits to how many authors we can accommodate. PLEASE NOTE: THIS SHOW FILLS UP EVERY HOTEL ROOM. Book early. Frankfurt is nuts. You almost have to book now for Frankfurt.

Conclusion:
===============

Based on our early research we will be the largest Literary Rights Agency at the show and probably the only publisher there with over 2000 authors on their roster. Please get back to us immediately if you are interested.

We are happy to answer your questions after you sign-up. But in general, the sign-up is pretty much cut and dried. If you have questions simply reply to this email and one of our team will assist you. You can either email your agent as per normal.

Thanks, we hope to see you there!
Tania, Linda, Mark, Kait, Nancie, Andrea, Georgina, Mary, Lisa, and all the team

(From Book Expo 2010 in May, in NY) Dear Robert & Ladies,

Thank you for such a wonderful expo, the experience unbelievable! I have worked many trade shows but not expos. I understand the necessity of a business presence for promotion, I thought you guys did a great job! Now I've book exposed, I totally 'get' why you "don't just walk up to distribute anything to large anything,"...But, the contacts made invaluable!

I was able to hand out books to Librarians, hopefully good contacts, people viable or not we'll see, who said they'd review, not to mention the advice via, Mark? (Nancie, your husband), awesome!

Thank you Lynn, for promoting my book with book sellers...you rock!! Thank you Nancie for the beautiful posters, bookmarks and flyers...love the color! And thank you Kait, for being patient during the expo emails...ahhh I'm sure!

I would have said "Good bye in person," but you were busy, and I know how weird some people can be, lol....hopefully me not included.

Talk to you soon, Lynn when you do get a chance...things calm down, if we could get Fairy Kick a Berry, Game On, out by Christmas, I think I can double sell...(1 & 2) type thing. (So nice to meet Georgie, I don't speak with her often, but she was lovely).

Now......Big, big, Pinia Colada!! :) no offense, if you don't drink.

I also emailed the Mirror this morning, and let them know exactly what what kind of press Strategic is, and who runs the operations.

I got a reply back pretty quickly from an "Andrew Penman" at the Daily Mirror saying that they were going to start looking into the situation and thanking me for writing.

Here's what Andrew Penman came up with.

Kind of sad though, that Andrew Penman is touted as being part of a team that uncovers scams amongst other things, and yet no one thought a 23-book deal to a 6 year old sounded fishy.

From Penman's article:
A spokeswoman for Strategic Book Publishing said: "We expect satisfactory resolution within the year and we continue to serve our clients, publish their books and sell a ton of books on their behalf - 200,000+ now.

Strategic Book Group

------------- Start Quote -------------
We are indignant that the judicial system is dancing to the tune of the malcontented writers that can never be satisfied. We believe that our clients are mature adults and that every risk is explained more than adequately. We believe the industry can and should take care of itself, and we are confident that this will be satisfied in our favor.
We believe we may have the largest database of ready and semi-ready books and authors in the world. We employ 125 very talented people, and we can move an author from their query letter to a finished book for sale on book shelves faster than almost any publisher. Our business model is to find as many of the best authors as we can, help them prepare for publication, help them get published, or publish them ourselves. We believe that we're the new model for the publishing industry and that our presentation to new publishing and agency clients is very straightforward. Details about how we present our business can always be found at www.StrategicBookPublishing.com and www.WLWritersAgency.com.
We believe the Florida Attorney General lawsuit is being manipulated by outside influences who may have provided misleading information to the AG and to our clients. We plan to look for evidence of collusion between Victoria Strauss, Ann Crispin, James MacDonald, and Dave Kuzminski who recently lost a defamation lawsuit. ((http://www.writersnewsweekly.com/kuzminski.html) ). We were not able to follow through on a prior lawsuit against these people because of financial reasons. We will not make that mistake again. Once we have reached successful resolution with the Attorney General, it is our intention to file lawsuits against our detractors.
Furthermore, we are assisting the Attorney General in resolving this current matter as rapidly as possible and we look forward to reaching a mutually agreeable settlement. The Attorney General has 175 complaints from four years of our business. During these same four years, we assisted 30,000 authors. If you will visualize each complaint or author as equal to one piece of paper, that is a half a ream of paper compared to sixty reams. That's about one inch of paper opposed to a ten feet stack of paper.
Frankly, our complaint rate less than 1 percent. If small businesses and publishers in the US can be the subject of a lawsuit for a complaint rate of less than 1% then we are very worried for our industry. We have thousands of published clients, and we have thousands of clients with their work in progress. Maintaining our services to our clients will continue to be our focus as we move forward to a successful conclusion of this matter. We plan to maintain our position and answer questions on our Web site, www.StrategicBookGroup.com. Please stay tuned and visit the site often. We are excited about bringing our story to the industry. It is time to set the record straight.

Ah yes. Me, Ann, Jim, and Dave, the Puppetmasters of Publishing.

Here's another article on the hoax, from the Publishing Perspectives newsletter. I saw the original article, and it has been edited to remove details about Strategic's business practices, as well as a reference to Writer Beware. Interesting!

Check out the comments; there's one from Robert. I made one also; we'll see if it survives moderation.

We were not able to follow through on a prior lawsuit against these people because of financial reasons.

Oh really? I was under the impression that Robert Fletcher did try to sue the puppetmasters of publishing in his disguise as a literary agent and got his arse handed to him. In fact, my favourite quote from the judge's decision was:

The plaintiffs have exhibited extreme bad faith in bringing this frivolous lawsuit for the sole purpose of causing great expense and harassment to Crispin and Strauss. Fletcher expressly states that it was his purpose in his emails. The Court concludes and finds that this case was brought in bad faith by the plaintiffs for the mere purpose of causing great inconvenience and financial costs to Crispin and Strauss (as set out in Fletcher's pre-lawsuit emails to the defendants). This case is frivolous and this Court finds so, finds that the two plaintiffs and their lawyer, Jerrold G. Neeff, knew it was frivolous before it was even commenced. This Court rules that the defendants, Ann Crispin and Victoria Strauss, are entitled to have all their legal fees and expenses incurred paid to them by the plaintiffs, Robert Fletcher and The Literary Agency Group.

Did Robert ever cough up the legal fees and expenses?

I just commented on the piece at Publishing Perspectives. The Strategic Trolls might be about to mass.

Something that somehow didn't click when I looked at Robert's comment on that story: he says that Strategic has published 2,500 authors and sold 500,000 books.

That averages out to 200 books each.

Whoopee.
