What happens when an e-book/e-reader distributor falls?

There's been all that hub-bub lately about B&N going down.
I have a Nook. So I'm curious as to what would happen if B&N just flopped over completely? Has it ever happened before as a case to look at for possible repercussions?

I'm guessing I would probably have to buy a new e-reader, but I'd really hate to have to buy all the books over again...

((Wasn't sure if it should have been in Roundtable or E-publishing, thanks for the move.)

I think your Nook would still be useable. You would either have to purchase and sync from an online bookstore or perhaps purchase a different form a then convert it to Nook(like with Calibre) and sync it. It would not be as easy or convenient but could be used.

B and N books use a venerable file format. You can get books in that format from a number of sites, then transfer them via your computer and a USB cable to your Nook.
