I have the new version of office (running windows 7) and for some reason it is inserting an additional space between paragraphs. I can't figure out for the life of me how to fix this. And to beat all there doesn't seem to be an "index" option so I can look up my question.

If anyone knows how I can fix this please let me know. Thanks

Check either the paragraph formatting (Right Click and select 'Paragraph') and check the Spacing: After: section. It should be set at 6 pt. I suspect it is set higher and is increasing the space after each paragraph.

Or, if you are using Styles (this is the way to go), check the paragraph formatting there (modify the style and select Format -> Paragraph).

This is for Word 2007 anyways.

Also, if you click the white question mark in the blue circle (top right hand corner), it will bring up the help search. Type in what you want to search for (i.e. "paragraph spacing") and it will bring up the topics that cover it.

Also, sometimes Word messes up formatting (seriously, it does :)) so sometimes you'll have to highlight a section, then set the paragraph spacing back to 0.

Word 2007 now defaults to having an extra line between paragraphs. You have to turn off (in Styles) the default to having extra lines.

To modify the style, right-click on the Normal style in the style selection boxes on the Home tab, and select modify. [Presuming it is the normal style you're having issues with, which you probably are. Normal is the style on which all other styles are based in Word.]

Change the option down the bottom from "Only in this document" to "New documents based on this template" and then click the format menu button and select paragraph.

Remove the space after from the style if there is any, and under spacing select the box "Don't add spaces between paragraphs of the same style." Click Okay.

Close Word. It will automatically save changes to the style.

You should now have your documents defaulting to no space after, regardless of whether that box is checked.

While you're at it, you might want to set your other style standards for Normal, such as font, etc.

[There is a 'normal with no spaces' style, but this strikes me as a waste of time.]

I also strongly recommend you go into your autocorrect options and turn off any of the autoformat as you type options relating to styles (such as Define styles based on your formatting, etc). That is the stuff nightmares are made of.

I am going to try that. Thank you so much.

I am going to try this, too. As a matter of fact I am going to keep this post open as I'm working on my manuscript so I can follow the steps to the letter and my manuscript won't be so messed up because this has happened twice already and I don't want it to keep happening.
