Anyone else ever notice your writing taking on the "voice" of whatever author you've just read when you're not paying attention?

It hasn't happened to me lately (having my muse screaming at me is probably drowning out all else) but I've noticed it from time to time in my own stuff.

Ah, a classic, I see.

I'm re-reading King's Danse Macabre--to remind myself of why I write what I write.

And a few other fiction books. It helps when you are in a slump.

The Virginian. Its the book that started me in writing. :D

all right Hounds. My little one doesn't seem to be waking up coughing as she has been (we traded that tonight for staying awake an hour after I put her to bed because she was coughing) but the preceding nights of it have taken a toll.

So I am off to bed, as long as the bats quiet down. (yes, they seem to be back. Or awake.)

gnight hounds :sleepy:

Yeah, this happens to me a lot. But I try to curb it by reading outside my genre a little and varying the authors. Otherwise I start to feel like I'm mimicking and not really writing in my own voice.

Perfect. Have you been rereading it? I love to do this, and write in the margins, highlight, circle etc. Mmmm, I'm getting all dreamy talking about it.

*looks for highlighter*

Oh yes. I have. :)

Soapy, with a book that you like and have re-read, do you find yourself wanting to rewrite it in places. Like me, I find a lot of spots in The Virginian where he could have been less wordy. You know what I mean?

I hope I'll be out of this writing slump soon. :)

Do you prefer Non-fiction to Fiction or is equal attention to both?

I have a bad case of the "Kinda-sorta-wanna-write-but-can't-seem-to-actually-do-it"s. Maybe it's this bloody sinus infection. I hate my sinuses. They always act up in the spring, summer and fall. Seldom in the winter, though.

I read almost exclusively non-fiction for about 10 years. And I loved it. But then about 2 years ago I found my way back to fiction and felt like I'd come home. For me, I have to have both going at the same time, otherwise I feel like I'm neglecting one or the other. (I don't know if that even makes any sense LOL)

Oh yeah. As far as Non-fiction goes, I prefer David McCullough's works. That's Non-Fiction right? Or is it fall under the history category? I don't really know.

Anything that's *not* fiction, falls under nonfiction for me. :D

This is a major problem for me. One can always tell when I've been reading Hunter S. Thompson. For a while, he was all I had been reading, and you could tell in my writing. Another one is Joe R. Lansdale. There are some folks with a voice that is unique and when I read them, I write like them.

*stifles the scream of his inner librarian*

:scared:

oh jeez, no, can't do that. Can't even think about that. I don't care how many times it's been reread, I never, ever write in a book. Just. Can't. Do it.

*shudders at the thought*

and in other news...

my little one seems to have developed an apprehension over the doctor. I'm not sure why, other than it has something to do with the prospect of shots, but she was very upset last night when I told her I was calling today. We talked about it on the way to school, and the most I got out of her was "because". Which, yes, is a default answer, but it seems to be the only one she has at the moment. As in, "I don't know why but I do just because."

So, going to have to figure it out and figure out a way around it, bcs we have an appointment this afternoon. She's had a persistent cough that turned a lot worse yesterday, and it needs checking. I don't want to create a fear of doctors in her, so I'm hoping this one doesn't end in shots, too.

Also hoping the sucker and the sticker after help.

:(

You know, it went well, although I forgot all about the sucker and the sticker. But there were no shots and oddly enough no apprehension when I picked her up from school or when we arrived at the doctor's.

Also no signs of serious infection - apparently Dad was over-reacting but better safe than sorry and we did come home with a prescription for some antibiotics and advice on which OTC medicine she should be on.

Plus we brought home pizza for dinner

:D

She'll be ok, Boston. Especially when this visit doesn't end in shots. :)

70 degrees here today - sunny and lovely.

My roses have baby leaves on them, my front bed lilies are a good 8 to 10 inches tall, my back bed lilies have broken through the soil, my apricots have buds, and my forsythia has a few blossoms on it.

Winter storm warning for tomorrow with "possible accumulations between 4 and 10 inches of snow." :Wha: I swear, I live in hell.

Sounds like heaven, Laurie. It's supposed to be 68 here tomorrow, I think. :)

Well I don't do it to library books. Sheesh. But when you own something, you can do whatever you want to it.

Come on! I can't be the only one who does this.

I get a more interactive experience when I write in my books.

I actually *learned* to do this in college, from librarian-types. :wag:

And I'm jealous of your roses and what not there, laurie.

We want to plant some flowers and maybe a small garden or something this year, but I have little idea where to start on any of it (and a small budget to do it on).
