How do you know people at the bigger e pubs don't get ' personalized experience'?

Yes, I'm not sure what's this "personalized experience" that I missed out on by going with Samhain. I mean, they sent me a Christmas card... should they have included a fruit basket as well?

I promo my ass of virtually and at real world book signings. Is is frustrating when the sales numbers don't add up? Hell yes. But that's not necessarily EP, that's all the factors of the book business.

Hi Queen and Brain. I suppose an pub experience is relative. I've heard just as many gripes about the big publishers here and elsewhere. I've heard great things about the publishers you mentioned to. So you know what? I submit to them all too. Some are rejected, some are accepted. I've liked some experiences more than others. That's how things go is all.

Sigh.

You like a pub sign, you don't, don't sign. Contract is over, you leave. You write, you submit elsewhere. If you write kinky, intimate epubs are great place to start. Move Along. IF you have the next big thing at Random House, God Bless You!

That's how I feel about this thread. There's no legitimate business discussion debate here. Move along, nothing to see. Take the humble pie folks and get back to writing! :0)

There has been a good debate here. People have felt they have been burned and they have the right to voice their opinions. And people have the right to say the love being with Eternal.
It's all about choice, a writer can stay with them or leave and I am glad for every post in this thread. It's give me the choice to never submit anything to them. I'd like for that editor to come back and answer the rest of the questions that have been asked since she last posted.

I agree Brain I'll all for the serious debate and sharing of information respectably, but I think the vehement posts that should have been handled privately scared away the other posters. AGain I say if you have a question just email them

When there's hullabaloo it's always best to stay out of it. Obtain information and move along.

Thing is... Anything posted online in a thread only meant for certain eyes like on EP may have the potential to be posted elsewhere. As for the medical info of the owner... I really don't think that should have ever been discussed with anyone.

I have Lyme Disease. So what? Any public knowledge should be used with discretion. Do I expect people to drop Lyme infested ticks on my house now because my illness is public knowledge? OF course not.

Big whoop. Another editor at EP is a pagan. Am I not going to work with her because I'm Methodist? Doesn't this splitting hairs sound dumb when its put in context?

What's out there or who has what illness has nothing to do with the contract debate that was initially brought up here.

Be professional or move on. It's as simple as that.

Love your Drinking Betty, btw! :)

Giving out medical info on your business website is not professional in my opinion. Others may feel differently.

Possibly a slight derail, buuuuut...

How do you know people at the bigger e pubs don't get ' personalized experience'?

Yup. My time with Lyrical has been WAY beyond what I'd expected, and they're not even one of the "bigger E-pubs" that most refer to (Samhain etc).

I'm kept in the loop with regards to every stage of the process, my editor is awesome, the owner rocks. If I have a question, it's generally answered within an hour, too.

They have a review coordinator that sends each new book to a load of review sites, the cover art is excellent (Lyrical has some of the best I've seen in an epub), I've not been charged a penny for anything... I could go on, but I'm sounding too much like an advert already. ;)

Don't blaspheme people on the internet. Isn't that another cardinal rule that remember everything you say online can be traced?

An ISP will only divulge this info with a court order, and believe me, there has to be just cause. And, if someone is using a Proxy, you're just plumb out of luck. Of course, the onus would be on the complainant, to prove just cause, and that everything that was said about them was untrue. So in this instance, that would mean that there wasn't an author who sold only 1 ebook in two years, and that he wasn't subsequently hit with a two hundred dollar demand, when he wanted to get out. Of course, we have no way of knowing if this is accurate or not. Perhaps it's a lie made up by a rival publisher?

I doubt that a tacky little outfit like EP, who appears to shaft their authors, wants to make too much noise, and find themselves under legal scrutiny, whether everything that's said about them is true or not. God only knows what kind of skeletons are dangling in their closets re royalty payments, etc.

Sounds great, Adam. Maybe all the disgruntled EP authors should head over to Lyrical.

I like to write something and have it be published in the hopes that my work is being read, not that I'm making money. I'm old fashioned in that thinking, I know!

It seems to me that people who are not buying a book are also not reading it. Whatever else might be going on I am struck that several authors have reported single digit sales over a period of years. No one has specifically reported anything in the "average" range (300 a year or so).

I didn't go running my mouth on a public forum about it.

Personally I feel *this* is what brings in the larger epublishing debate and gives ebooks as a whole a 'bad taste'. If a given epublisher offers only single digit sales and has a kill fee this should not be a secret. I hear authors talk about their publishers all the time. Just last week I watched best seller Jodi Picoult say some very critical but accurate things about specific publishers. If what you say is calm and accurate, it does not make you look bad. There is a middle ground between online venting and cowtowing to publishers, and this forum is a large part of that middle ground. It as what BBW is all about.

I didn't mean traced legally court order and such, I just meant that it will be public forever, like people who have called out of work injured and then posted on facebook that they were at the beach. One should always be discreet in a public forum.

Now we're back to business, but slightly off topic.

What I meant Vein was that I'm more excited that a sale represents being read, not dollar signs to me. However, I do wonder if you have statistics on e piracy? I have fought five sites that have had my pirated books. That does bug when when someone is reading, and I don't know about it.

See, intelligent and professional discussion, I like that. No need to accuse anyone of being tacky. (Not you vein)

I am practically in love in my editor at Loose id who has been with me from my second book. But I am also somewhat infatuated with my editor at Samhain. I am fickle like that. Oh and the co-owner of Loose Id once actually did send me a food basket when I really needed it.

Yes, that IS odd, considering that EP books are widely available on Fictionwise, etc. This is not a small, start up publisher by any means. Why the puny sales? This is taken from their website:

"Where are we available?

Our eBooks are available around the globe by purchasing from our website and through other eBook retailers in many formats through Fictionwise, Amazon, CoffeeTime Romance, All Romance eBooks, Mobi Pocket, Amazon Digital, Kobo and Content Reserve. The list is continually growing as Content Reserve and LSI distribute eBooks to many other retailers like B&N, Chapters/Indigo, Borders, Books on Board, eBook Mall, book expos and foreign Libraries."

I'm all four public discussion, but using words like tacky puts things a bit towards the nefarious side for me. Jodi Piccoult is a professional, not because she's rich and successful, but because she carries herself with appropriateness and grace about the writing business.

Unless there's something professional someone wants to ask me or we're going to discuss improving sales against e piracy, I'm probably not coming back to this thread. I've tried to say my piece in an honest thoughtful manner, and I'm receiving one sentence snide remarks more than legitimate discussion.

If anyone wants to know more about EP, just pm me. Vein I have to check your erec site again for the statistics.

I'm wondering if these authors with only one or no sales did any promo for their book. If you don't put your name or your product out there, who's going to buy it?

Epubs still have to work at marketing just as the print publishers do. So I don't think it's fair to blame the authors if the publisher isn't doing their share of the work too.

Who doesn't have to promote these days? If we want to talk serious business, I've not truly made any money because I put all of the money from my sales back into my marketing campaigns. Is that what the question should be. Not only why there are low sales, but who has *profited* from whatever sales they make?

Discussion, alright! :0)

Yep, something odd right enough. Add to this the picture that emerges of the former owner, who is still very much a part of EP -- broadcasting her mental illness and acting in an irrational manner with authors -- and one feels decidedly uneasy.

I fly so far under the radar, I've had the luxury of never finding any of my books on pirate sites. *two thumbs up*

Also, with 3 different e-publishers, my sales are in the single to double digit range. I know, I know.... it's all my fault because I don't visit a million loops and promote the snot out of my books.

My experiences have been vastly different and there are advantages and disadvantages with each of them. I've made mistakes, and yet I have no regrets. All I can do now is look forward, improve my writing, get an agent and seek traditional publication.

If some authors are happy with EP and others are not, the best we can do is process the information available and make our own decisions. I think there's enough evidence presented here for us to make an informed decision.

I wish the authors stuck in limbo the best of luck getting things straightened out. Perhaps the new owner will listen to your concerns? If not, let your babies go, get out there and write a bigger, better book.
