Sleepy tired? I can't do it. My brain starts shutting down and the words make less and less sense--if they make it onto the page at all.

I always write when I'm tired. I'm always tired.

Honestly, I've written some of my best stuff when I have been very tired. I think it has something to do with semi-consciousness.

Interesting. Well, they say writing is closest to dreaming in the use of the subconscious mind. Maybe it's the idea that when you're alert and conscious and imbued with daily tedium, you lose your will to be creative?

Yes i might be more focused at night, actually i'm sure thats true. I think i can get into it more, into that trance-like state, and then it pours out. A lot of it is crap i need to sort out later, but nothing compares with it when i want atmosphere , and original happenings.

I'm most tired in the morning and the evening (like right now). Yet I do my best writing at those times. It's good writing, and productive, but when I review it a day or so later, I see the revisions that are needed. It seems my mind at those times of day runs full speed ahead, yet I can barely keep my eyes open. In fact, to go to sleep, I tell myself stories. Been doing that since I was a little kid.

I can't write when I'm sleepy. However, if I stay up late enough I get into a trance-like state & that's when my best work gets done. I have a pipsqueak at home, though, so I almost never brave it. I need my energy to keep up with him!

The Best Place In The World...Absolute Write!!
Oh, I can't write when I'm tired. I just can't. When I feel sleepy while writing, if I haven't finished the chapter, I take a little nap and then get up and continue writing until I finish the current chapter, but it is impossible and very uncomfortable for me to write when I'm tired.

Sometimes I can, sometimes I can't. It depends if inspiration hits and I need to get it all down. My best writing doesn't come when I'm tired, but that seems to be when the inspiration hits me most. When I'm more awake and alert, that's when I do the edits.

I write late at night and it's a problem for me. How am I supposed to write about my awesome adventures when I'm asleep at the desk?

I find this fascinating

This is making me want to experiment! Maybe this weekend I'll sit down to write instead of going to bed and then later compare it to the stuff I've written while fully awake. How exciting!

I start work at 7am and then at University in the afternoon, by 5pm I need to have some sleep.

Then in the evening, I study. Time rather than tiredness is my problem. :D

I can write when I'm tired, but I know it's not my highest-quality writing, and I find that it's best to simply avoid it, since it requires a lot of revision and tends to be rambling and sloppy.

It's commonly said that writing "in the morning" (read: whatever "morning" means for you--the time when you're most alert, able to focus, and have the most energy) is usually the most favorable time to write. People tend to have certain periods during the day when they're most able to concentrate and be productive.

Your mileage may vary. For some folks, productivity comes naturally, while imagination must be eked out. I find I have an excess of imagination, but limited windows of focused productivity, when the words spill out in tight, precise sentences punctuated with canny metaphor.

However, I do find, like many others, that my imagination takes wing when I'm tired and slipping towards sleep, so I make sure to keep notebooks nearby for recording those wild, uninhibited ideas and images.

There's some interesting science behind the pre-sleeping brain. Check out the Wikipedia article on hypnagogia as a starting point.

First thing in the morning? Hell no. I'm no use to man nor beast. In fact the only reason I'm up now is I'm off to a hair appointment soon.

Last thing in the evening, when I have nothing else to do and preferably nothing to do the following morning? I'm more able to let go and write then. I've written some of my best work when dozy tired, as opposed to scratchy-eyes-not-enough-sleep tired.

Oddly, I often tend to want to write more when I'm sleepy and it's also often better than average. I also have a strange tendency to use bigger words the more tired I am. And randomly substitute words like "shoe" for words like "shirt"...

I don't like to write when I'm sleepy, exactly, but I do prefer to be relaxed and calm. So my favorite time to write is when I'm tired after a long run or hike. It doesn't always work out that way, of course, but I still prefer it.

Tired is easy. I can write when I'm too tired to move. But writing when really sleep is another matter. I can't do it, and really don't see the point in trying. It's easier and more productive to get some sleep, and then write.

Late at night, if I wake up in the night, yes I can write better, because I don't have the distractions of the day. The night is also more peaceful and atmospheric.

But really sleepy tired means that I can barely string a sentence together.

In my head.
I can't believe no one has mentioned coffee yet. Shame. The black stuff (not the proper black stuff, mind you) is the life. It's good. Keeps you awake. Nom.

I can't. I can't do anything while tired, not even watch TV. However, since most of my writing is in the evening, I always have a RedBull next to me while writing. Sometimes I'll chug one THEN start writing. (I know these drinks are bad, blah blah, i don't care) When I get tired, I put it away and go to bed. I simply can't focus on a sleepy mind.

Catch me if you can!
I write my best when I'm tired. Right before bed, lying down with my computer propped up on my lap and against my bent knees = perfection.

I do EDIT best though when I'm wide awake.

Do a few tabs of acid; that should keep you both awake and asleep at the same time.

If you can ignore the ants crawling out of your face you'll come up with a masterpiece in around five days.
