I'm in the middle of writing a story for work and I don't know what key I accidentally pressed, but now those bloody paragraph breaks are showing up everywhere - plus I've got those dots in between every single word. What the hell did i do? I can't figure out how to get out of it.
help me please

Could you give a little more information? What software are you using?

Click on the 'view' pull down menu. Then click on the 'All Characters' and turn off 'all characters'. There might even be a paragraph symbol there.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In Word 2003, look for the paragraph symbol at the top, probably to the left of the zoom level on the standard toolbar. Click on it.

I'm clicking on the paragraph symbol - nothing happened.
I'm using 2003 Word. I've got paragraph symbols coming up between each paragraph and dots to show the space marks between every word. i've clicked on the tool bar to remove the P symbol - doesn't work. I've gone into tools and view to get rid of it, doesn't work. There's some step I'm missing but I can't figure it.

Have you tried clicking "undo"?

(it may take a few clicks at this point)

I clicked on view and tried to uncheck the show paragraph marks box but they're still there

I'm clicking on the paragraph symbol - nothing happened.

You mean you clicked it more than once? Clicking on the paragraph symbol toggles formatting symbols on and off. If you click it twice, it will turn on again.

You can also toggle the formatting symbols by pressing these three keys together: CTRL SHIFT *

If that still doesn't work, click TOOLS/OPTIONS, and under the VIEW tab, in the section titled "Formatting marks," uncheck the box labeled "all." Then click OK.

I got it - geez, what a pain, for some reason the standard tool bar disappeared and I didn't realize it.
This is the kind of stuff that drives me nuts.
Thanks everyone for your help.

I'm running Word 2003, too, and it's definitely the Show/Hide Paragraph symbol that's been struck, sort of looks like the bastard child of a backwards P and a dollar sign. In this image, it's immediately to the left of the 100% view level on the toolbar. You do not need to go to View to fix this unless you have a customized toolbar which eliminated this symbol.

Maryn, sure

Oh, good, while I was writing it got fixed. Never mind what I said, then. Glad it's solved.
