I have spent the last year researching, developing, photographing, and writing a travel guidebook. I have also spent most of my time here on Absolutewrite as a lurker watching people ask questions with others answering. Occasionally, I'd pop on in and ask something if I was stumped. Now it has all come to a final product. And thank you! Thank you all for asking questions and thank you for answering them! It was a long process and this forum helped more than you know.

I have recently signed a distribution deal with Quayside Publishing Group/ Motorbooks International and the book is now about to be released on Amazon.com!

Thanks!

Ron Adams

Thanks for sharing the news! That is great to hear. AND good to hear about Motorbooks. I have a nonfiction proposal about buying old cars out to two publishers right now, and Motorbooks is on the list of publishers I plan to submit to in case the others fall through.

Can you tell us any more details about your publishing experience, the proposal stage, negotiations, anything else?

Ron, I'm sorry, I'm a bit late coming to this thread but I must congratulate you. You've obviously worked really hard on your Travel Guide and now it's paid off. That's great news.

I also must agree with you about "lurking" (politely termed 'reading'?) here at AW. I'm afraid I'm not prolific on the forums either (as you can see from my post count) but, like you, I have learned such a valuable amount from just hanging around and viewing others' conversations.

And I, too, am extremely grateful to AW.

So, a book at Amazon, Ron? Well done! I hope it sells well.

Good news and bad news. Good news is that I got picked up on my first try. I didn't have to shop around for other publisher/distributors. Well I did have a backup, but never needed to go there.

Bad news is that it was a long long long process. After the initial contact, it took 3, almost 4 months to get the title accepted. Even now a good 6 - 8 weeks after signing, things are slowly ramping up.

I do have some advice. When I went to them, I gave them a marketing plan that outlined exactly what I was going to do. It is a 3-5 year plan that detailed multiple titles and sales range. I even went so far as to list each and every single potential wholesale customer. Yes. Every single one. Some were grouped together, but I had a list of literally 100+ potential retail / specialty trade wholesale contacts. I also included response rates, conversion rates, orders per months...ect. (BTW - my back ground is in mail order/ catalog sales - this background helped ALOT in creating this market plan)

Book is released on Amazon Feb 15!!!
