I'm trying to start a blog to help with my beginning freelance career.
Unfortunately I'm in China, and the government is paranoid.
So all the sites like blogger, wordpress, and most of the popular ones are either automatically restricted, or take so long to verify they time out. THe proxy servers I've used so far restrict a lot of my access to the good sites as well.
I've wasted the entire day looking for alternate alternate blogging sites that may work, with no luck. Either had to spend more money then I wanted, the alternates were restricted or I hated the layout.
So now I'm downloading a proxy server directly to my computer that may work. And its not installing very well.
Sorry just needed to vent.
I'm going to bang my head against the desk now.

I'm in the UK, and the government is stupid. We have to make the best of what we've got. :)

Have you tried any of the Chinese-hosted blogging platforms, or are they restricted in what content they can host? There are others from China on AW, so maybe one of them can suggest a suitable blogging platform for you.

Oops, there's another thing I've been taken for granted. That is unbelievable that the government is that restrictive.

Oy, yucky. Scream away, we're here to listen. Is it possible to have someone else register for you, then pass you the username and password? Then you don't have to deal with timeout, right?

You used to be able to use blogger ftp in China. Then blogger decided to "deprecate" (stop providing) the ftp option--thus cutting off all their Chinese users.

This really makes me appreciate the "mostly" free speech we have here in the United States. Good luck to you and congrats for being so persistent.

Q

Thanks for the replies everyone. Fortunately I have good news, the proxy server I downloaded works. I'm looking at my blogs that I had given up for dead right now.
So if anyone has any problems with government firewalls or restrictions use this proxy: Surfbouncer. It costs a fee, but it works, and its fairly cheap.

That would have have made my life so much easier.

That wouldn't have worked with the timeout. The timeout was mostly with Wordpress blogs. So I could go to the Wordpress forums and register, but once I tried to reach the blog page it ended. So no updates, no visuals nothing. I was actually talking with my Mom in Canada last night, and we were thinking about my writing the blog posts, e-mailing them to her, and having her post them. Less than ideal, but to get the ad revenue and blog posting jobs it seemed like the only viable solution. Glad I don't have to do that now.
I'm going to work on my blogs now. Hopefully by tomorrow they'll be good enough to put in my signature.
Cheers.

Another reason to count our blessings of life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness and the ability to blog in our bathrobes without someone from Big Brother telling us, "stop that!"

I was actually going to suggest something like this, but without needing to have someone manually post for you.

You can post to a Wordpress blog (and many others) directly via email.

What exactly is being blocked in China, the blogs that are hosted by services like Wordpress.com, Blogger, Blogspot, etc.? Are you able to self-host and install Wordpress or your blogging software of choice on your own site?

Glad you've found a solution for now, but if you continue to have issues with this, I'm sure we can figure out a way to get around it.
