Agreed. He'd have reason to complain if he'd been tackled on the sidelines by Woody Hayes--which is still one of the funniest (and ultimately saddest) examples of a coach getting too much into the game.

Last Saturday, at the end of the Stanford-USC game, Stanford scored a late (and unnecessary) touchdown and then went for a two-point conversion. (They didn't get it) When the coaches met at the center of the field for the post-game handshake, Pete Carroll asked, "What was that all about?" and Harbaugh (Stanford's coach) retorted, "What are YOU all about?" (In probable reference to how often USC has run up the score on PAC-10 opponents over the past few years in quest of 'style' points in the BCS rankings) This, too, reminded me of Woody Hayes. During one of the epic Ohio State-Michigan battles, he went for an unnecessary two point conversion instead of the PAT. After the game, a reporter asked, "Why did you go for two points instead of kicking?" and Woody replied, "I went for two because I couldn't go for three."

heh.

Welcome to Ohio State-Michigan week. Haggis, I am now waiting for whatever feeble commentary you have to offer on the game.

*grin*

Harbaugh's been somewhat enigmatic for me. A bit love / hate the way he behaves, but I do see his point in this one. What goes around comes around and USC has definitely been guilty of running up the score and engaging in other silliness like front-flips into the endzone to humiliate opponents.

That said, you have to be careful. You can kick SC while they're down now but the likelihood that they'll be back on their feet and doing some kicking of their own next year is pretty high. The question then is, will Harbaugh have Stanford playing competitively year after year or is this just a brief power surge?

And Lord what a roller coaster for Michigan this year. Pre-season drama, great start, then an abrupt fall. I don't see any way they beat OSU unless OSU giftwraps some turnovers (entirely possible). Rodriguez is in for a storm if they get plastered yet again...

I agree with you about Harbaugh. I was just pleased that someone had the balls to turn the tables on Carroll's modus operandi and not back down from it. USC will probably have a better team next year, certainly. But Stanford has been getting quietly and consistently better and I'm thinking they won't be a rollover for anyone the next few years.

As for Michigan--well, my disgust with how they treated Lloyd Carr coupled with how Rodriguez treated his Mountaineers when he left to coach at the Big House precludes me from weeping any tears for what's likely to happen at the end of this season. Do I think Michigan will fire him? Nope. They've got too much invested in him and it wouldn't be fair to axe him so soon into his tenure there. He doesn't yet have the type of team he needs to run the offense he wants to run--but Michigan's current run on mediocrity is unlikely to help in the recruiting department. Ohio State is more than capable of giving the game away after gift-wrapping it with a big scarlet and gray bow. But if the Suckeyes...erm...the Buckeyes are on their game, Saturday afternoon is going to be long and unpleasant for the Wolverines. Both teams usually get really up for this game, which is one of my favorite rivalry games and always has been, so I'm thinking it'll be close until about halfway through the third quarter when the Wolverine defense finally runs out of gas. It could be really ugly--but then again, Tressel is unlikely either to (a) change his game plan ("Yep, first down. Time to run it up the middle even though it didn't work the last fifteen times we tried it.") or (b) run up the score on any opponent intentionally.

And right after the game is done and Michigan's season is over, I expect there to be a lot of squalling and screaming out of Ann Arbor. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

I'm not looking forward to Michigan/Ohio State. I think we all know how it'll turn out.

My poor father, who went there before the Rich Rodriguez days, could use the win. Wisconsin was brutal.

When I tended bar, I used to HATE Ohio State-Michigan day. First off, every obnoxious drunk in the world starts early on that day. Second, the money you make isn't worth the hell you put up with. Third, if OSU lost which happened more than I care to remember when John Cooper was the coach, drunk obnoxious OSU fans didn't tip (too drunk in their sorrow) and always started fights--usually with the one poor schmuck who was stupid enough to wear his maize and blue gear out thinking it would be funny.

Now that I'm not tending bar anymore, I love it. I love the tradition, I love the rivalry, I love the build up to it and the atmosphere. But this year is going to be the first year I will have watched the game completely by myself and that's probably going to suck profuesly. All the fun will be gone. *sigh*

I'm not checking any Michigan / Oh-crap-o scores b/c my fam is taping it to watch at 4. Besides, my USF Bulls are probably being much more interesting anyway. 17-16 against Louisville at halftime!

Harvard 14, Yale 10

You're up 10 to 7, two and a half minutes left in the game, and it's fourth and 22 from your own 26. What do you do? A fake punt?!?!? WTF?!?!?

Fight fiercely, Harvard! Fight, fight, fight!
Impress them with our prowess, do.
Oh, fellows, do not let the Crimson down;
Be of stout heart, and true.

Fight for Harvard's glorious name!
Won't it be peachy if we Win the game?
Oh goody! Let's try not to injure them,
But fight! Fight! Fight!

Btw, does anyone know if Tennessee played today? Can't find any updates, anywhere...

Of course. Tennessee beat Vanderbilt.

But how about the Georgia-Kentucky game? Or Oregon-Arizona? Cal-Stanford (sans band)? UConn-Notre Dame?

There were some GREAT games today--the kind of games that make college football so much fun to watch! It's the first Saturday in a while that the husband and I were both at home at the same time, and it was a lot of fun.

Ole Miss v. LSU was pretty exciting. And y'know what, mscelina? The VCR didn't record the Michigan game! And I'm kind of glad I didn't watch. USF won and I was kind of on a high. :)

Oh really? Well, Michigan lost. Just so you know. But the game was a lot closer than the score. Michigan's offense looked worlds better than Ohio State's--which isn't hard--but the combination of a young quarterback and the apparent conspiracy among Michigan receivers to do anything other than receive the ball. Forcier is going to be a good quarterback for Michigan and I've really got to like a kid who says "I lost the game" to the AP. He'll be back and better than ever next year. Ohio State's dominance over Michigan isn't going to last much longer.

In my opinion anyway.
