My time may is short before vacation and I want to finish this project before I go. There's still plenty of great rock singers to choose from.

Would've been a good idea to make separate threads for "boys" and "girls" here... How one can chose between Iain Gillan and Mariska Veres? Or between Matt Bellamy and Dolores O'Riordan? Not really fair...

I'm hoping not to have to leave, I should find out soon. I'm having an argument with a mod over the responsibility of agencies for their agent's actions, but that's irrelevant, except my time may be short and I want to finish this project before I go. There's still plenty of great rock singers to choose from.

Oh, and I really hope you won't have to leave, of course... Why people can't just drink instead of having drama? :(

Ditto on the sentiment re drama.

And separate threads aren't really necessary for this particular bit of fun. We've had best drummer/guitarist/bassist threads with no gender separation. And the endgame, I believe, is to come up with a fantasy band and we don't need two of each for that. :)

My thought on this is that male and female vocals are differently toned, colored and enjoyable in different ways. That's why there's such a strong separation of them in Opera, for example. While the style of playing instruments doesn't depend on gender at all. :)

I hear ya, but you could say basically the same thing about wildly diverse guitarists like Jeff Beck, Angus Young, or Vince Gill. All I'm saying is that for the purposes of the nomination threads here, keeping gender out of it seems appropriate, otherwise the pie would get sliced into so many pieces that the 'game' Diana started would quickly get unwieldy.

I agree. Siouxsie Sioux used to say, "Don't call me the best female singer. Call me the best singer."

Speaking of which, where is she? Glenn Danzig?

I would vote for Mick Jagger for best rock frontman, although maybe not vocalist. That would be a separate category.

What about Roy Orbison who has been generally described as having a 3 Octave range, (although some have given him credit for up to 5 Octives) and who was considered by Elvis to be the greatest singer in the World.

How'd I miss this? NaNoWriMo. That's how.

But I protest the absence of Brad Delp. He sang EVERY vocal part, all the melodies and harmonies, on the first three Boston albums. Maybe he's not the best ever, but he's gotta be in the top 20. Wait, there's only 18 names on that list...

Not that it matters one bit, it looks like Freddie Mercury won hands down.

I won't vote on this, because Dylan is not on the list. Now his voice today is creaky, but he sang (and wrote) some of the greatest rock and roll songs ever. Just saying, he should be on here.

And why also, is this list missing Lennon, McCartney or Harrison?

no vote. this list is fraudulent.

Sorry Diana. No offense intended.

Well, in support of Diana, she did have a separate thread for nominations and if a singer got at least two nominations, they made it to this poll.

So if none of yours, just as my own favorite Lonesome Dave, didn't make it, it was for that reason.

Still... I'm not voting either. :D

Yes Dylan is one of the greatest songwriters ever, but he has never been more than a mediocre singer. Since day one he has sung flat as often as not, he has always had an average range at best, and his voice has always been nasally ... so to include him in a poll of best rock vocalists doesn't seem appropriate to me. That'd be like including Stephen Stills in a poll of best rock lead guitarists. There's talent there, but nowhere near being close to the top of the heap.

Okay. Well, I see that Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney Eric Clapton and George Harrison are not on the list either.

are they all out of tune too?

to have any sort of rock poll without Dylan, Jagger, McCartney, Harrison and Clapton just seems fundamentally wrong.

To me, 'best' means who is appreciated the most, by the largest audience. Dylan and Jagger, McCartney, Harrison and Clapton and several others who were omitted from this list have outsold everyone on that list in total. That is pretty much the definition of 'best'.

If you're just looking for technical note-singing ability, then, in MY opinion, it does no good to even chart the rock singers. Rock songs are meant to be sung loud, racously and irreverently. If you want technical note-singing ability, just trash the 'rock' singers and make a poll for Opera singers and Michael Buble (or whoever that guy is).

Just my opinion.

still no vote from me.
