Must be. Every pit I've been in, guys have been respectful and careful. I've never even been groped doing stage dives.

Only time I've ever seen a metalhead misbehave was at a Therion concert in NYC. One drunken concertgoer standing behind me yelled "Show your tits" at the ladies on stage in between songs.

This to me is the poster-child of why prog metal beats the shit out of death, doom, and the other "heavy" genres.

I may be biased. :D
If you're going to try to introduce people to prog metal, there are, IMO, bands with better popular appeal.

I can think of American rock musicians who've ended up in prison for assault and murder (who who have been murdered). But I can't think of any who've been imprisoned for arson. Wow. Even the NFL players don't do that.

You can find references to other murders and assaults, but you have to dig around on individual band member pages. Not worth the effort.

Since you said you like documentaries, I found one on Youtube for you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4U33U_UyzQ (Appears to show how fucking nuts Gaahl is.)

Well, many years ago, my sister told me she got groped at a metal concert. Pantera, I think. Then this happened:

He did get a bit of a shock when I grabbed him by the shirt front and, um, showed him the error of his ways. He kept well away after that. :D

Yeah, but none illustrate quite so well why it's so different. I mean, if you're going for the common denominator, you might as well break down and just suggest some symphonic or power metal, which will appeal to a lot of people.

The Scandis first claimed to be Satanist, then figured out if you are a Satanist that means you believe in God too. They have burned some churches.

If you want some more specific stuff on this sort of thing I suggest you look up the band Mayhem.

A rough summary:

  • The lead singer (who would cut himself on stage and apparently love the smell of rotting flesh) killed himself by slitting his wrists and then shooting himself. His suicide note said something along the lines of "Pardon the mess".
  • The guitarist who found the body did what any sensible person would... went and bought a disposible camera, rearranged the room and took photos. One of these later ended up on a bootleg. He also apparently stole some skull fragments and made a nacklace out of them.
  • A few years later the bassist was found guilty of church arson and of killing the guitarist, who the bassist claimed wanted to torture him to death (if you're curious you can read the essays about it on his website. No, really. It's the one entitled A Burzam Story: Part 2.) He was actually released from prison a few months ago.
You might also want to look at the youtube comments on any number of unblack metal bands (aka Christian black metal) such as Antestor or Sanctifica and see the sheer number of idiots that claim that black metal must be about satanism.

I love black metal, but the scence can get pretty scary sometimes.

They're on the Amazon reviews, too. I've been working my "Not Helpful" button to the bone lately. OTOH thanks to eMusic and Amazon MP3s, I've added some really neat music to my MP3 player, from Antestor to Horde to Mortification. One nice thing about unblack metal is that if the song is preachy, I can't tell because I'm still not sure what they're singing. ;) OK, that can be a disadvantage as well. I don't think my sister-in-law ever believed me when I tried to tell her that CD I was listening to was Christian heavy metal. (Just because the singer sounds like he's possessed by a demon, that doesn't mean he can't be singing a Christian message.)

Edited to Add:
Dang, now you've given me another one to look for. (Tells self to search for Sanctifica later.)

Yeah, I noticed. :)
