Even if you don't have Fantastico, CPanel, or anything like that installed, you can still just download WordPress and install it by hand.

It's been years since I've seen a commercial web host that doesn't support PHP/MySQL (or some other compatible database system). Even free hosts offer it these days.

You can do a lot more with a self hosted install of WordPress than you can with 'self hosted' blogger. If you have the skills and the time you can mod it beyond all recognition and turn it into a community site, or a fully featured content management system instead of a blog.

Of course most people don't need or want to do that, but it's nice to have the freedom to do so if you choose.

If all you want to do is run a blog, then I say use whichever one has the themes you like, and the interface you like.

Keep in mind that in order to do this you need to know how to use ftp, sftp, or scp, and be comfortable with directories and permissions.

If you don't know what that means, don't try doing this yourself.

As a blogger, I've used both Blogger and WordPress, and prefer WordPress.

As a reader who likes to comment on other people's blogs, I have a hard time with Blogger's comments section! There are more steps to making a simple comment in Blogger, and Blogger doesn't save your information (so when you go back, you don't have to enter it all in again).

Where in Canada are you, Claire? I'm on Bowen Island, BC :)

So if you want to encourage comments in your blog, I suggest WordPress...
