Every now and then a writer comes along who manages to capture the places and people he has known and events he has witnessed, and show them as clearly in words on a page as any photograph could possibly do.

Dick Stodghill was one such writer.

I just heard this morning that he has died.

His writing legacy goes far beyond PA, but yes, the same gentleman.

And he will be missed.

Oh no...

Just last week he sent me a pm about the Yankees and the World Series. We talked a lot about baseball through AW. I really grew to respect him...

RIP, Mr. Stodghill... :(

I am saddened to hear about his passing, he was one of a kind. He was blogging on his personal blog up to November 3, 2009. Paging down a bit, you see on October 27, 2009 that he was suffering some severe medical problems.

Check out his personal blog, it is a lot of fun and has some great photos.

I'm sending his wife a link to this thread, so she can read all of your messages.

I know she'll enjoy seeing how many lives he touched.

I first read his musings on the PAMB (PublishAmerica message boards) and here when he came over to AW. He was an accomplished writer, being pubbed in Ellery Queen many times. Here's what I found to be poignant (one of his last posts on his blog): http://stodg.blogspot.com/2009/10/losing-independence.html

Will miss him.

I didn't know him, but I just went through his posts. He cared about writers getting a fair shake. He'll be missed.

We only exchanged a couple of PMs, but he was a fine gentleman. My condolences to his family.

Oh my, what a sad thing to hear. Mr. Stodghill was always a "tell it like it is" kind of man. I always appreciated his candor when I was on the PAMB. I was sooo happy when he turned up here. He will most certainly be missed.

What a Guy

This is personally upsetting and I still can't believe it. I spoke with Jackiet 45 minutes before Dick died. We had a lot of fun teasing each other, especially about exaggerating his age. I count him as a friend.

His blog was serious but his humor came out in TheMysteryPlace.com and his comments in CriminalBrief.com

Miss you already, Dick.

Dick did not want an obituary or a funeral, and his wife Jackie has honored his wishes.

Jackie has asked that anyone who wished to pay tribute to him purchase a copy of his book "Normandy" and donate it to your local library.

(Please refrain from any PA comments on this thread.)

Dear Friends of Dick Stodghill,

Wanting to keep Dick’s memory alive in all of us, Marie Pacha and I have decided we wanted to honor him with an anthology based on the things Dick liked and disliked most: from broccoli to mysteries. In keeping with that theme, we are inviting you to submit short stories and poems on topics of interest to Dick.

The tentative title is: Broccoli to Writing: and Everything In-between. In addition, on the front cover it will read: A tribute to the man, mentor, and friend of aspiring writers.

The proceeds of the book will go directly to an established charity of Jackie’s choice, in Dick’s name. We will be announcing the charity she selects soon.

Please adhere to the submission guidelines put forth in this letter. Submissions are open to all levels of writers of short stories and poems. Your submission can be fiction or non-fiction, in any genre. Any submission must be the original work of the individual submitting it, and rights for publication in this anthology must be clear.

Word count must be 1,000 to 7,500 words for short stories or essays. Poetry of any length will be considered. Again, the topic should be one of interest to Dick. Since he had intense opinions on everything from broccoli, hamsters, and cats to writing, please focus your submissions on topics in those or similar areas.

Submissions are to be received by January 10th. The same rules apply as if you were submitting to an agent or publisher. Short stories should be formatted in Word doc with 1” margins on all sides. It should be double-spaced and the pages numbered in the lower right-hand corner. A cover letter, with the title, the name you want used on the story, your contact information, and any other relevant information, should be included. Poetry should follow the same guidelines, minus the double-spacing.

We will edit and proofread all accepted submissions!

You will retain the rights to your submission. Once a piece has been accepted you will be asked to sign a release giving us the right to use it for the anthology and any advertising or marketing used for promoting that anthology.

Projected release date of this anthology is sometime in late spring or early summer. A definite date will be decided when we receive all the submissions.

Please submit your submissions to [email protected] or mail to Weaving Dreams Publishing, P. O. Box 194, Watseka, IL 60970.

Marie and I look forward to working with you, Dick’s friends, to honor this fine man.

Regards,

L. Sue Durkin and Marie Pacha
